Whitman’s Love Language: Situationships & Commitment Issues
The Whitman Wire
by Meghan Kearney, never been in a relationship at Whitman

Illustration by Helios Santoro Commitment issues are spreading through Whitman like an STD, with one situationship after another infecting the campus. It can start from a simple Tinder swipe, a drunken conversation at a party, or even trying to convince someone to vote for you during an ASWC General Election. You meet someone who you think is your type, but with summer being only six days away (or in some cases six months), your first thought isn’t “I want to take this person out to dinner,” it’s “I want to Snap them for the next month, get to know them casually, and never have to commit.” Thi ..read more

Behold! Olympic Women’s New Uniform: The Dishrag
The Whitman Wire

Illustration by Mikayla Kelly Nike’s new uniforms for women’s Olympic Track and Field are a disgrace. For anyone wondering what it looks like, it’s basically a women’s one-piece swimsuit cut disturbingly high at the bikini line. Apparently, the inside look we got of the Olympic uniforms were just one of the options for women’s bottoms. Why is it even an option for women to wear something that looks like a social experiment? The sneak peek picture quite literally provided us a sneak peek. Thank God it was just on a mannequin. It’s cut so high that you can see the mannequin’s hip bones and far b ..read more

Let’s break down this financial mystery. Events: These fees ensure you can attend soul-crushing ice breakers that are supposed to make lifelong friends out of total strangers bonding over cold pizza. “We make sure there’s precisely enough of a food shortage to cause a stampede,” said a WEB employee proudly, as we surveilled the battlefield at Reid Ballroom’s last corporate team-building workshop disgu ..read more

Hyperpop vs. the Hipster
The Whitman Wire
by Lily Yost, Opinion Columnist

Illustration by Kai Bowen News flash for all Swifties and fans of the 1975: your taste is unoriginal. Your musical palate is bland, and you’re just like every other young adult. But be careful — if you enjoy music that’s too over the top, like hyperpop, you’re a freak with no sense of good music. Either way, the source of pleasure warrants judgment.  Meet the hipster, a figure in search for the middle ground. The hipster uses taste as the currency of “coolness” and prides themselves on uncovering hidden talent long before the masses catch on. But beneath the hipster’s claim to cultural el ..read more

Should I Hollaback, Girl?
The Whitman Wire
by Ansley Peard, Feature Writer

Illustration by Edyn Parsell “Hey baby girl, let me see that ass.” I started, nearly letting the stack of books I had been carrying slip from my grasp. A man leaned against a wall on the sidewalk in front of me, lazily flicking the ash from his cigarette as he slowly let his eyes graze over the length of my body. I felt the sour taste of bile rise up in my throat. It was nothing I hadn’t experienced before, but the onslaught of emotions that follows in these situations never fails to unsettle me. Panic flooded my veins, my heart beat tumultuously, the flush of anger and humiliation crept up my ..read more

During their March 31 meeting, the Associated Students of Whitman College (ASWC) quietly passed a resolution to increase the student fee after three years at the same rate. The increase moves the membership fee to 0.85 percent of tuition, or an increase from $422 this year to $539.84 for next year.  Junior ASWC Finance Committee Chair Maximilian Walthers emphasized the need to support clubs, which the increase will facilitate. This semester, 16 new clubs that affiliated over the course of the 2023-2024 school year requested budgets for the first time to fund their organizations in the com ..read more

Stop and Smell the (Senior Spring) Roses

Kasey Moulton, Editor-in-Chief With each email from the senior chair, I become more and more acutely aware that my time sandwiched between Isaac’s and Alder is quickly coming to a close. I always knew from the start that my days here were limited, but it’s different to see the countdown staring you in the face.  As my peers and I plan to go our separate ways, I find myself revisiting the “what ifs” more than any other part of my college career. What if I’d said no to something? What if I took more rhetoric classes? No matter how easy it is to ask these questions in retrospect, I found mys ..read more

From the Archives: Savoring Life One Word at a Time
The Whitman Wire
by Sarah McCarthy, Staff Writer

This column initially appeared in the October 19, 2006 edition of The Whitman Pioneer. The opinion was written by a staff writer and appears as it was initially ran; the only edits are to spelling. “Take time to savor each moment,” “Cosmo” (or “Ladies Home Journal,” or “O,” or “Shape,” or  “Better Homes and Gardens,” or “Women’s Weekly” or “Marie Clare”) tells me. “That way, you’ll get more out of every day.” They tell me to eat slowly and chew my food (by savoring, I will eat less), to take time out of my busy schedule to watch a sunset (this will help me decrease stress) and, were ..read more
