  There is an old tradition all around Europe during the middle ages of exposing in the public square those who have committed a crime. This is also the case of Monopoli which in piazza Garibaldi still keeps the old column where those "undesirable" persons were tied and usually stoned and spited by the respectful citizens. It´s name is The Infamous Column (La Colonna Infame) and it still shows the marks of the unfortunates attached to it.
