Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Groceries, laundry, dishes. Cleaning, organizing, shopping. Scheduling, appointments, planning, childcare, birthdays, gifts, events, school, extra-curricular activities. Car maintenance, duct cleaning, furnace servicing, general house stuff. This is just a sample of the things swirling through my head constantly. Plus, I’m expected to know where the missing keys, toy and remote are, among every other item in the house. And that is just while we are in the house. Getting out of the house takes it to the next level. Do I have enough diapers, a change of clothes, snacks ..read more

Let’s talk #COVID, return to school and the impact of the global pandemic on families. No one was spared impact as the world shut down, however studies are revealing that women have been disproportionately impacted which is leaving us on a slippery slope, risking the undoing of years of work in the gender equality space. The time has come for organizations and government to acknowledge this impact and proactively review policy to enable families, especially women to strike a balance while pursuing a meaningful career. In my opinion there are two key components to consider: a safe return to sch ..read more

Women are Just Born Evil....?!

A few days ago a woman said to me, “women are just born evil”. It stopped me in my tracks. Not because I couldn't believe what I was hearing, but rather because it wasn’t the first time I had heard it, and certainly not the first time I had heard it from another woman. What stopped me was a deep sense of sadness that there are women who say this (openly and proudly) about other women. This got me thinking about why some women find it difficult to genuinely support other women, where it stems from, and why we need reminding to support each other. Why some women need to distinguish themselves fr ..read more

While the number of female senior leaders has grown over time, women still find themselves under represented at every level of leadership. Despite the valiant efforts of women and men before us, the concept of “the broken rung” still exists. According to Leanin.org Women in the Workplace 2019 report, “1 in 4 women think their gender has played a role in missing out on a raise, promotion or a chance to get ahead.” The same report also states that 33% of women and 11% of men have seen or heard of biased behaviour toward women and 73% of women reported experiencing microagressions - everyday disc ..read more

Where do you start on a blog post when things are so utterly insane right now? I sat staring at my blank screen for ages, not sure how to put what I feel on paper. For my next blog, I was meant to write the second part of my blog series on women and pregnancy (which is still such an important topic to me) but I couldn’t. I couldn't focus. Writing something about pregnancy, as a privileged white woman seemed trivial as I sit here watching what is happening in the world. I am passionate about sexism and feminism, but, it doesn’t seem to compare in light of what is happening right now. This world ..read more

Not to be funny, but unless Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movie Junior becomes a reality anytime soon, women, are in fact, the only sex that can bear children. Whether we’d like to admit it or not, this biological reality sits at the centre of equality issues for women. While diversity and inclusion is at the top of most organizational agendas unconscious bias (or conscious?) still exists when it comes to hiring and promoting women. Despite the fact that this has been a key priority for the last decade or more, we don’t see organizations making as much traction as we’d like. Maternity leave is still ..read more

I went to teachers college determined I would be a teacher. I loved teaching and I just always thought, that is what I would be, a teacher. One thing led to another and I ended up working in a Bank. Starting out, I had no idea that my skills would transfer to a corporate career, but slowly the dream of being a high school teacher was a distant memory. I moved around within the organization, took risks and demonstrated agility. Every few years, I changed roles or departments, I was earning a good income, gaining experience and skills that I loved: sounds like a dream, right? The realit ..read more

Hey, how are you doing? How are you feeling? Worried? Anxious? Hurt? Do you have a loved one you wish you could see, are worried about? Have you lost your job? Are you trying to balance a job, being a parent and being a teacher? Is it all overwhelming? Are you taking time to focus on you? Do you have time to focus on you? Do you see others clearing out cupboards, organizing their lives and finishing all those jobs around the house they have been meaning to get to and are wondering, "how the fuck are they finding time for all of that?" The truth is, there is no right or wrong right now. There i ..read more
