Firewatch Review (Switch): The Meaning in Nothing
Twin Sticks

It's 1989 in Shoshore National Forest, Wyoming, as Henry starts his first day in Firewatch. Most people take on this isolating role to escape problems in their life. It's perfect. You spend the summer alone in a Watchtower, surveying the land and reporting forest fires. Henry is here as his wife Julia, has dementia. The deterioration of Julia and its effect on Henry is shown early on through a text based introduction. It’s a beautiful sequence, with a few heartbreaking choices along the way. Without spoiling anything, things do not go well. The post Firewatch Review (Switch): The Meaning in No ..read more

Röki Review: Visually and Narratively Breathtaking, but Slightly Frustrating

Family is a common theme in indie games. In Ori and the Will of the Wisps we embark on a quest to save a loved one, while What Remains of Edith Finch shows us how a family curse leads to their haunting demise. Both games are as beautiful as they are harrowing and Röki, a point and click adventure game set against the backdrop of Scandanavian folklore, is no different. Fast forward 2 years and version 1.0 was released after a whopping 30 updates. The result of all these updates has created a game which is packed to the brim with content. Not only is Deep Rock Galactic one of the most rewarding games I’ve ever played, it is one that still surprised me after my first 20 hours of play. In my humble opinion, Deep Rock Galactic is one of the best co-op games released this generation. That sounds like a bold statement, so over the course of this Deep Rock Galactic review, let me explain why. The post Deep Rock Galactic Review: One Of The Greatest Co-op Games Of Th ..read more

Upcoming Video Game Reviews: July/August 2020

It’s been a busy time at Twin Sticks over the last two months as I prepared my first ever video review. I used to make short films in school and college so I already had some background knowledge on how to edit footage. (And I was pleasantly reminded of how much fun it was back then too). But it was other technical aspects which took the longest to figure out. Like how to capture game footage in a decent resolution, or how to record good sounding audio. (I’m still learning on the last one). Moving forwards all of my future reviews will be available on my blog in written form, and on YouTube in ..read more

5 Games That Need A Remake
Twin Sticks

Nothing sets off nostalgia quite like playing a video game from your childhood. Games like Spyro, which I played on repeat on the original PlayStation, have experienced a rebirth through the Reignited Trilogy. Complete with additional polygons and smoothed out controls. And more recently, Capcom has blessed us with the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes while Square Enix finally released Final Fantasy VII. With all these remakes and remasters we've seen on current gen, it's had me thinking about other games that I would like to see given the same treatment. So many classics have been overshadowed b ..read more

Minecraft Dungeons Review: Good, but Better Elsewhere

It’s hard not to be cynical when one of the biggest franchises in the world wanders into the territory of other successful games. If something new is added, it’s generally accepted as a worthy entry, rather than a product designed with profit in mind. When Gears of War recently entered the squad based tactics arena, following the trail blazed by the brilliant XCOM, it was clear that large amounts of care and attention was applied throughout development. Gears threw away the complex base building and focussed on a more action orientated experience. Gears Tactics was a success, although it’s str ..read more

Streets of Rage 4 Review: 90s Beat ’em up makes Successful Transition into Modern Gaming
Twin Sticks

Some retro games struggle to make their transition into modern gaming. There are problems moving from 2D to 3D, racing to keep up with technological advances or when seeing the genre you once loved replaced by something new. For Streets of Rage 4, the first Streets of Rage game since 1994, the transition into modern gaming is a monumental success. By keeping in line with the original trilogy, Streets of Rage 4 feels like Streets of Rage through and through. The end result is a game from the 90’s, cleverly disguised in the modern era by a thick coating of 2020 paint. The post Streets of Rage 4 ..read more

Twin Sticks is a Top UK Gaming Blog

It’s been an odd time at Twin Sticks UK Gaming Blog. I, like most people, have been under strict lockdown regulations in the wake of a global pandemic. I’ve been inside for roughly two months with my girlfriend, both of us working from home at our IKEA kitchen table. It’s the same table I write my blog posts on, eat at, and occasionally have friends gathered round to play board games. (Ironically the last game we played was Pandemic - if only we knew...) But in difficult times... The post Twin Sticks is a Top UK Gaming Blog appeared first on Twin Sticks ..read more
