Seat for Sadness // Many Voices Speak

I love Sweden, there is something beautifully chilled and mysterious about it, to me at least. That feeling of quiet intricacy and darkness has been captured perfectly by Matilda Mård as Many Voices Speak. Layers and layers of vocals, chilled as f— drums (which I love) and the organ like keys merged in synth. Nothing fights for your attention as everything is so well balanced. This is one that you will want to leave on repeat. It almost feels like a lullaby for those days where you just can’t relax and forget the day. Check Want It Kept too, her previous release. It’s incredible. The new album ..read more

Friends and English Elegance // Joe T. Johnson

To start, let’s talk about ‘Friends‘ the twee indie-pop banger. There is a definite style that Joe has that he has absolutely mastered here, the catchy riffs and multi layered guitar work which instantly makes you think this could be a 60s b-side from the Doors or Kinks but then, as soon as I heard the opener I was instantly put in mind of The Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen. I don’t mean to gush about Joe’s sound but he consistently hits the nail on the head with all his singles, it’s almost like he is Biff with the Grays Sports Almanac in Back to the Future (random reference but I’m feeli ..read more

Clouds // Monkey & Goat

Ok, first off, this band has a great name, secondly, I was in a band called ‘Tiny Toes’ so these lyrics are amazing (as they contain tiny toes) and thirdly, this song is beautiful. There is such an unassuming quality to this that I really can’t explain how and why it’s great, it just is. It brings to mind Belle & Sebastian and Peter, Bjorn & John but I think that drawing comparisons is a bit empty when this folk-indie-mellowness really does just need you to close your eyes and take it in. Makes me wish it was summer, this is camping music ..read more

Stuck Pig // Einsam

Driving bassline, tight beat and moody atmospheric keys. From Bristol to Vienna, the disconnected themes of Einsam are pretty stark and to be honest, pretty un-pause-able (just made up a word there). I really can imagine anything other than smoky European bars and basement gigs, this track is one hundred percent built for it. Times like these really do seem to uncover a natural ability in everyone to do something spectacular and I think this solo project is spectacular. If ever you are feeling introspective and wandering the city at night alone, this is your soundtrack. Think Jonathan Somethin ..read more

I Feel No Pain // Rénovations

Hello again, I hope you all are doing well during this prolonged stint of being trapped indoors. It’s not all doom and gloom though. For your consideration, here are Rénovations all the way from sunny Edinburgh. Although in reality all three are from France, Italy and Romania which seem a lot more exotic – anyway, moving on. The newest release is I Feel No Pain and it’s quite a massive track. Electronic grunge, like Pale Waves but worth listening to. Aside from that, I’m getting Soundgarden, Head Automatica and a bit of Stone Temple Pilots? It’s all about the huge Bass and pleading vocals, abs ..read more

Daydreamer // Boshe

Massive Stranger Things 80s dream pop vibes here, like everything about this track feels like it’s been made for the Breakfast Club. It’s incredible. So aside from the blanket of keys with the massive synth build up, the offset of chimes really works. Everything seems so considered that it is almost like the whole song just emerged from Gary Numans brain one day. Vocally, Boshe has a Purity Ring/Beach House/Boy Friend sound that is incredibly hypnotic. I cannot wait for the album. So enough of my rambling, listen, now. Tell me what you think ..read more

Be Still, Act Natural AND Warmth // Chief Springs

So, unusually, I am doing a second post on a band. But hey, Chief Springs have got a couple of new awesome tracks! Ok, so we are doing this in date order so first up is the warm, feel good but also slightly unsettled Be Still, Act Natural. The ideal song for when you are feeling fragile, it’s acoustic basic with its high pitched string section is comforting, into the chorus where we open up into more cymbal and strings. Gentle ups and downs with the vocals that we are all coming to really admire. Drums come in and we are settled for the rest of the track, literally everything just works. The n ..read more

Digital Depression // MY-HI

Have you ever wanted to take a trip back to the 90s? The massive vocal styles of Incubus and Soundgarden, the huge basslines and odd quirky but completely fitting riffs? The massive fills and singalong choruses. MY-HI have smashed it with this single. It’s like a perfect storm of elements and that guitar is stuck in my head now. This is the lead single to an album that is clearly going to be epic. Listen now, tell me your thoughts ..read more

My Light // Mika Jones

Beautiful dark song by Mika Jones, vocally reminiscent of Pearl Jam and 80s/90s punk, though there is a real surf vibe in the guitars and bongos. Pretty perfect, it’s dark enough but not hard to listen to, in fact, it’s pretty comforting! As it progresses, it becomes more experimental with various different parts, rock to piano, there isn’t a single thing I’d change! I genuinely think that he should get much more press. My Own Worst Enemy is a classic too, breaking into a dance beat showing there is no limit in genre for Mika which is brave and something more bands should be doing! Check him o ..read more

Veil // Holsky

A fine blend of the Maccabees, Gary Numan and White Lies. Holsky has created an incredible, slow dancing, atmospheric, 80s tinged masterpiece. The visuals used set the scene, but the track really sends you back, this track could be the soundtrack to an emotional part of an 80s movie. The slow beat with the reverb and keys are an awesome nod to Kraftwerk while there is a pained but powerful quality to the vocals that is really exciting to hear. Let me know what you think ..read more
