People and Plants: Take gardening advice from the pros
Broomfield Enterprise
by Kelley Rawlsky

Social media posts can be entertaining and informative when it comes to gardening. However, I urge gardeners to use caution in taking advice. This past week, an individual shared they had spider mites on a spruce tree. A person responded that nicotine was a natural insecticide and that a chemical engineer (not a horticulturist) recommended liquid nicotine. Since they could not find any liquid nicotine, they crumbled up cigars and threw them on the branches. My first thought after reading that post was, “Surely, you jest.” My second thought was one of concern for the many birds and squirrels wh ..read more

At the start of the spring tennis season just a couple months ago, Fairview junior Stella Laird prepared herself for another year as the Knights’ No. 2 singles representative. A season-ending injury to returning Class 5A 1 singles champion Quinn Bernthal, however, unexpectedly vaulted her to the top of the lineup. She transitioned seamlessly. On Friday at her own home court, under the shadow of the Flatirons, Laird herself loomed large as she blasted past her two opponents at the Class 5A Region 5 tournament. She only surrendered one out of 25 games and swept Legacy sophomore Macy Black 6-0, 6 ..read more

As changes are made to a bill that would overhaul the state’s 30-year-old school funding formula — and school districts and education groups flip their stances in response — Boulder Valley Superintendent Rob Anderson continues to oppose the bill. ”When you make improvements to a bad bill, it doesn’t make it a good bill,” he said. “The entire thing is something that we’re closely monitoring. There have been so many changes and so many amendments, I think people have no idea what this will actually do.” House Bill 1448, spearheaded by House Speaker Julie McCluskie, a Democrat, aims to create a ..read more
