Covina boys basketball coach Will Bissman, who in 2012 led the Colts to their first league title since 1995, resigned on Wednesday after a lengthy stay with the Colts program that began during the 2006-07 season.
Bissman was at Covina for 18 years and will remain a teacher at the school. Although he has a son that has graduated, he has two daughters, an eight-year-old and 12-year-old with down syndrome that he is often seen with at games, and wants to spend more time with.
“It was the right time,” Bissman said. “This year was tough. My girls are getting older, and my oldest with down syndrome ..read more

When Scott Hoen ran to be Carson City, Nevada’s chief election official two years ago, he campaigned on “election integrity,” promising to make sure voter registration lists were accurate.
In the chaotic aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, he believed that too many of his fellow Republicans were convinced that there was widespread voter fraud. By keeping voter rolls current, Hoen thought he could restore voter trust in his county’s election system.
He won. And every day since he took office, he and his staff have tried ..read more

Insulin for Medicare beneficiaries “was costing 400 bucks a month on average. It now costs $35 a month.”
President Joe Biden, in a March 22 speech
____
The cost of insulin in the United States has risen considerably in recent years, with some estimates finding that Americans have paid around 10 times as much for the drug as people in other developed countries.
But recent changes by the federal government and drug manufacturers have started to drive insulin prices down, something President Joe Biden often mentions at campaign events.

When the FDA recently convened a committee of advisers to assess a cardiac device made by Abbott, the agency didn’t disclose that most of them had received payments from the company or conducted research it had funded — information readily available in a federal database.
One member of the FDA advisory committee was linked to hundreds of payments from Abbott totaling almost $200,000, according to a database maintained by the Department of Health and Human Services. Another was connected to 100 payments totaling about $100,000 and conduc ..read more

A pair of heart devices linked to hundreds of injuries and at least 14 deaths has received the FDA’s most serious recall, the agency announced Monday.
The recall comes years after surgeons say they first noticed problems with the HeartMate II and HeartMate 3, manufactured by Thoratec Corp., a subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories. The devices are not currently being removed from the market. In an emailed response, Abbott said it had communicated the risk to customers this year.

Toronto Raptors two-way player Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA on Wednesday after a league probe found he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors and wagered on games, even betting on the Raptors to lose.
Porter is the second person to be banned by Commissioner Adam Silver for violating league rules. The other was now-former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014, shortly after Silver took office.
In making the announcement, Silver called Porter’s actions “blatant.”

Let’s cut right to the chase: 2024 will not be an easy year for the nation’s home buyers. The shortage of available homes will continue, which will hold prices aloft. And though mortgage rates may come down a bit throughout the year, they’ll continue to play a major role in affordability for buyers who need a home loan.
The pandemic disrupted many things, not the least of which was the housing market. The seasonal fluctuations we’d generally expect in housing prices and inventory were upended in 2020 and 2021. And while 2023 data indicates a return to more typi ..read more
