NEW YORK (AP) — The movies are clawing their way back in theaters, but, so far, not everyone is showing up like they used to. While certain segments of moviegoers are closer to pre-pandemic levels, older moviegoers and family audiences have been slower to return. That’s shrunk already narrow opportunities for non-franchise films to find audiences. Well before the pandemic, superheroes and spectacles were already a bigger and bigger slice of the box-office pie. Now, they’re closer to the whole meal. If the trend continues, it wouldn’t be a surprise to those who have long forecast that the theat ..read more

BERLIN (AP) — The German government’s tax income over the next few years is expected to be considerably higher than previously forecast as Europe’s biggest economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic. The figures released Thursday could help the incoming government as negotiators tackle the thorny issue of how to finance the plans of a prospective three-party coalition led by center-left Social Democrat Olaf Scholz. He is the finance minister and vice chancellor in outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government. An updated forecast by tax experts for the government predicted that the govern ..read more

CAIRO (AP) — An advocacy group says internet has remained largely disrupted in Sudan since last month’s military coup, despite a court order for providers to restore the service. NetBlocks tweeted on Thursday that the disruption has entered its eighteenth day and that this is an “ongoing impediment” to democracy and human rights. A Sudanese court on Wednesday ordered the country’s three main telecommunications providers to restore internet access. However, authorities have not shown any signs yet of carrying out that order. The Sudanese military seized power in October, dissolving the country ..read more

NEW YORK (AP) — The skeptics of Wall Street have gone missing. As the stock market surges to record after record, activity has dwindled to a nearly two-decade low for the traders known as short sellers, who make their money betting stocks will fall. That will sadden nearly no one. Critics from Capitol Hill to Main Street often paint short sellers as merchants of pain who only hurt the market. But experts and remaining short sellers say they provide an important service suited for this moment: offering a counterweight against stock prices that may be rising too high, too fast.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian authorities say they are preparing new restrictions to counter the unrelenting surge of coronavirus infections that has engulfed the vast country in recent weeks. An Associated Press analysis of temperature and population data shows that exposure to extreme heat has tripled and now affects about a quarter of the world’s population. To better understand the issue, Columbia University’s climate school recently published a global dataset with estimates of both population and temperature. It shows that in 2016, just under 1.7 billion people lived in areas exposed to extreme heat. The majority of them are in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Kyle Rittenhouse told jurors at his murder trial that he tried to get away from his pursuers the night he shot three men during street unrest in Kenosha. Rittenhouse said he never wanted to kill anyone, saying: “I didn’t do anything wrong. I defended myself.” His nearly daylong stint on the stand Wednesday amounted to his account of the events of a few frenzied minutes in August 2020 during the demonstrations that followed a white police officer’s shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man. Rittenhouse was mostly composed but sobbed so hard at one point that the judge called a r ..read more
