Rapid City police investigate homicide, suspect in custody

A Rapid City man has been placed under arrest for Second Degree Murder following an assault at a local motel. On June 6th at around 10:00 p.m., police were dispatched to 710 Meade Street for a report of an assault that had taken place.  On arrival, police were directed to a room at the motel where the assault had occurred. Police located the assault victim inside the room, unresponsive. Police rendered emergency life-saving measures until a medical unit arrived. Medics determined the man was deceased. After more than 24 years of service to the citizens of Rapid City, Chief Karl Jegeris has announced his intent to depart his leadership position at the Rapid City Police Department. He will be leaving to join the Children’s Home Society of South Dakota as their Director of Collaborative Excellence. Chief Jegeris joined the Rapid City Police Department in 1995. His career path through the agency has seen him hold the positions of School Liaison Officer, Juvenile Detective, Juvenile Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Patrol Captain, and Assistant Chief of Police. Assistant Chief of Police Don Hedrick has been accepted into the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a Bloomberg Fellow. Assistant Chief Hedrick is one of fifty-eight Bloomberg Fellows this year, and is one of eight leaders in the nation to receive the fellowship to pursue a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the school. Rapid City police officer tests positive for COVID-19

The Rapid City Police Department has recently learned that one of its officers has tested positive for COVID-19. The RCPD learned of the positive test result late Monday afternoon. When the officer first began developing symptoms, he immediately informed his supervisor. In accordance with CDC guidelines, the officer has not returned to work since first developing symptoms and remains in self-quarantine. CALEA to conduct RCPD’s accreditation assessment virtually

The Rapid City Police Department is scheduled for an assessment as part of a program to achieve re-accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards. The original on-site assessment was postponed due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions placed on assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. Police make arrest after multiple burglaries, seek public’s help in identifying remaining suspects

The Rapid City Police Department is currently investigating multiple early-morning burglaries. At the time of this release, one suspect has been taken into custody. At around 3:55 a.m. on April 19th, police were dispatched to 643 North Lacrosse Street for an alarm. On arrival, police observed that one of the business’s windows had been broken.
