Speedy seeks Congressional seat
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A state lawmaker running for Congress said he’s doing so because he’s concerned about the direction the country is taking.
Mike Speedy has served in the Indiana House of Representatives for more than a decade and spent nearly seven years as an Indianapolis City-County councilor before that. He also owns a small business. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday afternoon, destroying homes and other structures as the twister tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions. Injuries were reported but it wasn’t yet clear if anyone was killed in the storm.
Multiple tornadoes were reported in Nebraska but the most destructive storm moved from a largely rural area into suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people.

Man involved in crash that led to deputy’s death arrested
PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A 20-year-old driver police believe could be responsible for the crash that led to Hendricks County Deputy Fred Fislar’s death was arrested Thursday on unrelated charges.
According to the Plainfield Police Department, Juan Gomez was arrested Thursday night on operating while intoxicated charges filed in March.
Gomez was leaving Eskenazi Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for burns, when Marion County authorities took him into custody and transported him to Hendricks County.

Eleven supporters fume over Hogsett MLS pitch
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The president of the Indy Eleven’s official fan club on Friday said plans to bring an Major League Soccer team to town could destroy everything Indianapolis soccer fans have built.
David Ziemba, the president of the Brickyard Battalion, says he wasn’t satisfied by the answers Mayor Joe Hogsett gave in his initial announcement on Thursday or in an interview with News 8 “Daybreak” anchor Scott Sander on Friday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Department of Health has released new COVID-19 data on the state’s coronavirus dashboard.
The data was collected through Tuesday, April 24. The state’s dashboard is updated weekly on Wednesdays.
Indiana’s COVID-19 death toll since March 2020 rose to 26,497 on Tuesday from 26,466 on April 9. That’s an increase of 31.
Since Jan. 2, when the state reported 25,978 deaths, Indiana has recorded 519 deaths.
In comparison, Indiana on April 26 had reported 228 flu deaths in the 2023-2024 season so far.

(CNN) — Inflation remained stubbornly high last month, but it hasn’t stopped Americans from spending.
The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index — a closely watched inflation gauge favored by the Federal Reserve — accelerated to 2.7% for the year ended in March, according to data released Friday by the Commerce Department.
That rate was above economists’ expectations for a 2.6% gain and landed above February’s reading of 2.5%.
On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.3%, unchanged from the pace seen in February.

(WIBC) — A man and woman from Princeton, Indiana, – both of whom have criminal records – may soon find themselves in prison again for stealing mail to the tune of $1 million.
Michael Wright and Cortney Young have both been charged with mail theft, and they are individually facing charges for crimes such as unlawful possession of a mail key, aggravated identity theft, and more.

(MIRROR INDY) — The city of Indianapolis plans to expand renewable energy options for residents in the coming years, including putting solar panels atop a closed southeast side landfill and letting households share the electricity they generate.
