A parolee and sex offender has been arrested and charged with killing a woman at a motel in Pomona in February, police said Tuesday, April 2. Tommy Ray Belin is scheduled to be arraigned April 23 at Pomona Superior Court on charges of murder, assault on a person by any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and being a sex offender who failed to register with police as a transient after moving from a residence, according to court records. A San Gabriel man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Tuesday, March 19 for the 2019 murder of a part-time firefighter from West Covina. Shaun Cardarelli, 41, was handed the sentence by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mike Camacho less than a week after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit an arson. There’s a grave of a man in San Antonio Canyon above Upland shrouded with as much mystery today as when he died about 147 years ago. The gravestone – not erected until he had been dead about 75 years – says he was Jacob Shinner, born in 1827 and died in 1877. But there’s no certainty that it’s his real name or birthdate. The earliest newspaper articles about his death – from 1927 – say his name could have been spelled as Shiner or Schneider or Skinner, his first name might have been Joseph, and he may have been from upstate New York. A San Gabriel man was found guilty Friday, March 15 of the murder of a firefighter from West Covina whose body was found burning near a roadside in Upland in 2019. One person was killed and two Upland police officers were injured after a crash in downtown Upland on Monday, March 11. The driver, Adam Ulrich 35 of Victorville, died at the scene and the two officers sustained minor burn injuries, Upland Police Chief Marcelo Blanco said. There will soon be more green space in downtown Upland. After three years, the project to bring clusters of parklets to the downtown area broke ground this week near Second Avenue and Ninth Street. It’s part of the city’s push to revitalize the downtown area. The contractor has started work on the first two parklets, located on East 9th Street.
