I am in a dilemma of choosing whether to use a new screen or a popup window for several similar use cases: Client management: from a list of clients, click to view client detail or create new client. Appointment Scheduling: from a screen containing a calendar (weekly or monthly) click on an event to view/edit or create new. and several others like these.. how do i choose ..read more

We're hiring an agency to create a mobile app for us as I am the sole UX person at our company and don't have the bandwidth. What are the deliverables you would want an agency to provide to help you maintain or create new flows for an app? As an additional bit of background, we have the following requirements: for iOs and Android use Material Design System as a base Likely built on Flutter or similar Components built in Figma Any additional thoughts about working with third parties are welcome ..read more

Why don't modern computer keyboards have dedicated keys for the most frequently used commands?

As an IT professional, I probably press the CMD+C, CMD+V combos more often than I press the key for letter Q. I also often use the command to copy a piece of screen to the clipboard, which is a super awkward combo SHIFT+CTRL+CMD+4. At the same time my Mac keyboard is full us useless "function" keys. Windows laptops are the same. My question is, why don't computer keyboards evolve to accommodate usage patterns? If COPY & PASTE were dedicated keys, they would be the most used function keys by far ..read more

As an learning language app web, should we differentiate between display language and mother language?

I am currently writing (translating) ux content for a web app that targets children who want to practice languages. Our UIUX designer decided to come up with 3 types of language systems, one is interface language, another is the user's mother language and the last one is the language they want to learn. Her purpose is to let users freely choose the interface language they are familiar with. In the app, when users are learning languages, the system will show their mother language ( depending on the sections). For example, based on the uiux's case study: the user is a Japanese learning English ..read more

What's the name of the concept of saving Single Page Application UI state to URL?

I believe that SPA should save it's UI state to the URL - be it page navigation, search input or setting of filters. So that when I copy the URL and share it with someone else that person will see what I see. What is the name of this concept ..read more

Examples of UI for implementation in progress?
User Experience Stack Exchange Forum
by Robert Smith

I'm looking to get a sense of what is out for intermediary interfaces for mid-implementation/setup for cloud applications (enterprise or otherwise) - I'm exploring the idea of providing some level of value to users before full functionality is available for a SaaS application. This might include messaging about implementation progress, a dashboard with partial functionality, and links to FAQ articles. Can anyone point me in the direction of any applications or services that do something like this? I haven't had much luck yet so far with my search ..read more

Best practices or resources about online assessment
User Experience Stack Exchange Forum

I have a project to deliver an online assessment of a large number of users. The assessment is for a psychological research project, so the content is mostly self-description asked in a variety of fashions. The question types are quite varied, and include Likert scales, fill-in-the-blank, word ordering, matching graphics, etc. The users speak the same language (English) and have a mostly homogeneous cultural background. Users can only take the assessment once and they are limited to forward movement through the assessment because the later questions are chosen based on prior answers. Given tha ..read more

Select multiple items in a list with a touchscreen, specifically for use cases like file explorers

With a list "select" widget with multiple selection allowed, how to enable the selection of multiple items with a touchscreen device? Drag/drop or swipe cannot be used for selection, it is already used to scroll the scrollbar of the list Click / tap cannot be used because this is used to select a new single item (see the UX in Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder) Double-click / double-tap is already used to open the selected element (e.g. like in a file explorer) Important: my real use case is something close to a File Explorer list of files: Note: This is linked to Select multiple i ..read more

"Datepicker" where user can specify approximate date
User Experience Stack Exchange Forum

I'm building an application where a user should be able to enter a date, but where I want to allow for "approximate" dates, such at the 19th century or the 1950th. Sometimes the user also knows the month and date, sometimes not. I could do this with various options and selectors, but since this will be used over and over again, I would really like it to be quick an easy. From a logical views, it should be fairly straight forward since you start by entering the century, then (optionally) a decade, then (optionally) a year etc. But I can't get my head around how you would design this in an intui ..read more
