A Norwalk man is facing multiple charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol after prosecutors said he helped break police lines, encouraged other rioters to enter the Capitol and chased an officer inside the building.
Michael Haltom, 43, faces nine total charges, the United States Department of Justice said in a news release:

A father of four remains hospitalized in the ICU after being shot in a road rage shooting on the 5 Freeway.
The victim, Noel Pena, 48, was struck while driving on New Year's Eve. The bullet entered through his armpit, shattered his collarbone and left fragments in his throat.
“It’s something no one expects,” said Pamela Pena, the victim’s daughter. “Like, I’ve heard about it and I’m like, ‘Wow, people are so ruthless out there doing these types of things.’ It’s not normal, should not be normal, to find out it happened to us.”

A homeowner armed with a hammer recalls fighting back against an intruder who had broken into his Norwalk home on Thursday.
The incident happened around 1:45 a.m. as the victim and his wife were sound asleep. They were suddenly awoken by their barking dogs.
"[The dogs] are not really big barkers and their bark was really deep," said the victim, Kevin Perez.
Perez looked around his home and didn’t see anything at first until he noticed something moving in his office. Suddenly, he saw an intruder standing in the dark.

One person was found dead in his car and two other people were wounded in a shooting in Norwalk Sunday night.
The shooting was reported around 8:40 p.m. in the 12700 block of Pioneer Boulevard near Firestone Boulevard.

Deputies arrived to find a man unresponsive inside a car that appeared to have struck a parked vehicle.

A robbery suspect was arrested after a lengthy, crash-filled pursuit through Orange County on Wednesday.
The suspect was identified as Albert Kiel, 30, from Norwalk according to the Brea Police Department.
Officers responded to an in-progress theft at a Target store on the 800 block of East Birch Street in Brea around 11:45 a.m.
When police arrived, they spotted Kiel driving away from the store. They attempted to pull him over but instead of stopping, he sped away, leading officers on a pursuit.

The family of an unarmed man who was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies is demanding a new investigation and other changes nearly two years after his death.
Frederick Holder, 28, was shot and killed in Norwalk on June 23, 2021.
Deputies responded to a reckless driver near the intersection of Alondra Boulevard and Piuma Avenue. They found a box truck driven by Holder and asked him to exit the vehicle, but he drove away.

Authorities are searching for an at-risk woman who disappeared in Los Angeles County on Saturday.
The woman was identified as Natalie Simpson, 31, by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
She was last seen on the 16000 block of Clarkdale Avenue in Norwalk, authorities said.
Simpson is described as a Hispanic woman standing 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 145 pounds.
She has brown eyes and blonde hair. She has a scar on her left eyebrow and a tattoo on her right arm. She was last seen wearing a brown coat and black ripped leggings (the same pair seen in the photo provided by LASD).

Caltrans is closing portions of the 5 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk Thursday and Fridays and into Saturday morning so overhead signs can be changed and installed, the department announced.

A woman had her tire punctured during a robbery in Norwalk in which she was followed to a grocery store, officials said Thursday.
The incident occurred June 16 when three men apparently followed the victim to a grocery store, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
One man allegedly watched the victim withdraw cash at a bank in Norwalk. Then all three men followed the victim into the store before going back outside and puncturing the victim’s right rear tire, officials said.

Three people were detained after a man was shot in the face while driving along the 5 Freeway in Norwalk Monday morning, officials said.
The California Highway Patrol got a call about a freeway shooting about 11:45 a.m., Officer Eric Torres told KTLA.
Witnesses told authorities there was heavy traffic at the time of the shooting.
The assailant, who was traveling in the No. 3 lane, got out of his vehicle, walked to a Penske truck behind him, opened the victim’s door and fired an unknown number of shots, Torres said.
