The Second Amendment Needs the Second Commandment
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

The Second Amendment and the Second Commandment suggest a disturbing link if we have ears to hear. In Luke 8:8 we hear Jesus say, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear” after telling the parable of the sower of seed. We hear these same words in Luke 14:36 when Jesus talks about the saltiness quality of salt. And in 2 Timothy 4:3 we read, “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” Therefore the question is, what do we hear in ..read more

Video from Pope Francis to Religious Sisters, But I Have Questions
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

In a recent video Pope Francis expresses his gratitude and prayers for religious sisters and consecrated lay women. The Pope’s praise of the consecrated life of women is perceptive, and I am thankful for him and his compassionate leadership. To see the pope’s video to religious sisters, click here However, dear Father Francis, I have questions. And though the video is directed to those living a vowed/consecrated way of life, my questions include all women. What follows is the text of the pope’s video with my questions inserted in bold type: This month, we will pray in a special way for religio ..read more

Thoughts About Purgatory
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God
by Sr. Chris
2y ago
In the Catholic church during this month of November, thoughts on purgatory often take center stage.  We may hear phrases such as, the holy souls in purgatory, or we may be encouraged to pray for those in purgatory. I share some ideas from various saints, faithful Catholics and non-Catholics on this topic of purgatory. The common belief in the Catholic Church about purgatory seems to me to be somewhat schizophrenic. At the funeral we say that our loved one is in heaven; the next day we are praying for their release from purgatory. My personal belief is that the sufferings we endure during ..read more

Stop Saying Thank You for Your Service
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God
by Sr. Chris

Why should we stop saying, “Thank you for your service” to active/retired military and veterans? And what new sentence can we learn to say that is more honest than “Thank you for your service”? Are you devastated by the messiness and chaos you saw during the Afghanistan evacuation? Take a moment to think of those who learned it was their loved one who died in the suicide attack at Kabul. Is your broken heart overwhelmed with the darkness of that endless sucking hole? Remembering all the other families who have sunk into that same shattering experience over the past twenty years, are you tempte ..read more

Anti-vaxxers, Anti-maskers, and Freedom
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

Does freedom offer an honest justification for the decisions and opinions of anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers? The definition of freedom is the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.  When anti-vaxxers decide to not be vaccinated they cite their right to be make their own choices. When anti-maskers refuse to use a proven method to block the spread of a deadly virus they proclaim their freedom. However, their decisions imprison and confine all others in danger. And they also subject themselves to the possibility of death, a “prison” from which there is no escape. Personal freedom has pers ..read more

Vital Difference between “a” and “the”
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

Two words, a and the, are defined as articles in English Grammar. These two small words are called determiners and make/determine the vital difference in pro-life discussions, conversations and decisions. The argument against the phrase, equally sacred priorities, highlights the difference between a and the. The critics claim that equally sacred, makes abortion a preeminent issue rather than the preeminent issue.  Let us be clear: life, all life, is the preeminent issue. Therefore, the life of the unborn is as precious to God as the life of the already born. The life of the preborn is equ ..read more

Truth Should Not Be Refreshing
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

Since the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the prevailing attitude expressed by many  commentators as well as the general public is that truth is refreshing. The majority of our citizens understand why “refreshing” is the operative descriptor of the president’s comments, staff briefings to the media, and messages and updates to the people of this country. But truth should not be refreshing; truth should be common. And  more to the point, truth should be expected, even mundane. During the former guy’s presidency, we endured thousands of lies. We heard lies that propped up ..read more

President Joe Biden and Catholic Church Leaders
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

As a Catholic president, Joe Biden’s faith matters to church leaders. Acceptance or rejection of Biden as a person of faith depends on each leader’s image of God and their understanding of the Gospel. Biden’s Faith: A Positive Response Archbishop Wilton Gregory, recently named as the first African-American cardinal, was asked why he would not deny Communion to President Biden.  His reply focused on his desire to begin a relationship with the president that allows them to have a serious conversation. He admitted that there are issues that Biden and he will be diametrically opposed to but s ..read more

Era of Change or Change of Era
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God
by Sr. Chris

What’s the difference between an era of change and change of an era? Our whole life has been about living in an era of change. And it is often said that change is the only constant. Living in an era of change can mean that protests challenge those structures that are wrong. New ideas can inspire different ways of doing things. And questions may offer a change in focus. But a change of era is different. Institutions crumble rather than being able to sustain new ways of acting or believing. Therefore, the world will never be the same. In our present time we see that structures we relied on and t ..read more

Autumn Change
Adult Faith Meets Santa-God

Autumn change displays the grandeur of transformation. The changing color of the leaves is a visible sign that invites us to reflect on our personal journey of change. In her Autumn Prayer, Sr. Catherine Higgins. shares the hope that we have the wisdom to discern what needs to be left behind and what are the needs of the future. Though autumn may be the primary seasonal reminder of change, 2020 with its virus has intensified how we change our relationship to others and to our home, the planet earth. Because so many people have cared about the needs of their neighbors, the Sisters of St. Joseph ..read more
