THE VAN

During one’s lifetime, we all own at least one vehicle with “personality.” Mine was a 1962 Ford Econoline van. It was the barest and most stripped version produced, with a 200 cubic-inch straight-six motor, 3-speed manual trans, two front seats, and the minimum number of windows. You know, white bread loaf.  No radio, no heat, one sun visor. The thing was so basic, its wiring harness couldn’t have contained more than one wire. When it found me in the early 1980s, the van still wore its original, if battle-scarred, “telephone truck white” paint because in its former life it was—an ..read more

Premium EVs are here.  And you’d have to look a long way to find a nicer one than this decidedly upmarket two-row Genesis. Unlike some EVs there are few choices in terms of motors, drive wheels, and extended range batteries: The EGV70 comes one way, and that’s pretty much loaded.  My tester did include a $6800 Prestige equipment package, which adds a lot of nummy tasty stuff, and you can decide if its worth including on your E GT70 or not.  Its 320kW Dual Motor (Front: 160 kW/Rear: 160 kW) powertrain is good for 429 horsepower, and trust me this vehicle isn’t quick, its g ..read more

This ’66 GTO lives about a mile from my house, and its all I can do not to leave a note on the windshield.  It’s licensed and runs, as it’s gone from this driveway everyday during business daylight hours so its at least complete and a runner with current tags Much of this rust and paint crust is surface, but some may not be, so a full strip and media blast is in order. I’d junk the Keystone mags and semi-janky exhaust system, and go for slightly restomod 16-inch “PMD” stock looking wheels plus factory pipes. Stock, clean, and original for me please We’ve all done it.  Eyeballed a ..read more

Hyundai has quickly become one of the industry’s most major forces in the development and production of EVs.  Two of its slicker offerings are the Ioniq 6 sedan and the Ioniq 5 four-door hatch (or demi SUV). Both are based on much the same technical and engineering platforms, offering similar performance, specifications, features and pricing – although there are differentiating nuances between them. So which to buy? Click on any photo to see it full screen in high res. The most significant differences between them are the design and body packaging. The I 6 is a more conventional 4-door ..read more

I love motorsports history, especially that of the Indy 500, Formula 1, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Click on any image to see it full size in high res Since the first Indianapolis 500, held in 1911, won by Ray Harroun in a Marmon, 73 people have died at The Speedway in connection to the 500.  This includes drivers, mechanics, spectators — anyone that was at the race at the track, that somehow lost their life.  Among the more unexplainable passings over these now 112 ensuing years is that of young driver Albert J. “Pete” Kreis.  Kreis was a tall strapping young man, and one wi ..read more

Ford’s Garage isn’t owned or operated by Ford, instead a out of this world good sports bar BBQ joint in Dearborn, just in the shadow of the Ford World HQ compound. Get the Ribs, one-of-many great burgers, or the Brisket! Note the Ford Model A truck in the background Since its introduction a couple years back, the compact 4-door only Ford Maverick pickup has been hot property.  They’ve been tough to get and often sell for a premium over the window sticker MSRP.  There were all sorts of supply chain issues for certain components, and the recent UAW strike hasn’t helped matters much ..read more

Moon Equipped Documentary is a wrap, coming to theaters and social media ASAP

The late great Dean Moon was a character and three-quarters.  Truly one of the early high priests of hot rodding, besides being a dragstrip and Bonneville racer, Moon was a sharp-eyed photographer, and major producer of hot rod and racing parts.  His famous “Moon Eyes” logo is ubiquitous in car culture, and people put this sticker on their bikes, cars, refrigerators, beer kegs — you name it, even if they don’t totally understand what “Moon Equipped” is really all about.  Dean is no longer with us (passing away in 1987), yet his brand and company live on, still housed in their o ..read more

Clara and Henry Ford had but one child, he being Edsel Bryant Ford, born November 6, 1893 in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. Ford the younger became a highly influential member of the Ford family dynasty, and also in the history of the worldwide transportation company that bears his name.  He was highly instrumental in bringing the Lincoln brand into the Ford automotive portfolio, and also for convincing his father that Ford needed to build aircraft for a variety of civilian and military purposes.  And yes, he is the namesake for the ..read more

I can’t tell you how many so-called experts proclaimed that as soon as pure EVs became more practical and prevalent in the marketplace, the conventional, non-plug-in regenerative hybrid (HEV) would be instantly and forever dead. Ain’t happened. The vehicle architecture popularized by the original Toyota Prius and Honda Insight continues to live, flourish even, and grow.  It was originally seen as a “bridge strategy” between gas-only powered vehicle, and the future of EVness, and has propagated itself many times over, and continues to expa ..read more
