CHICO — Two years ago, the Jesus Center moved the very first residents into Chico’s Pallet shelters. Its was born from conflicting interests, fulfilling a requirement for Warren v. Chico to provide a suitable place for homeless people to stay without fear of criminal punishment — along with beds at the Torres Community Shelter. But for Jesus Center Director Amber Abney-Bass, the 177 Pallet shelters that her organization manages are part of a continued mission to lift people up. “We are involved in this project today for the same reason we got in it two years ago … we have a very deep, strong b ..read more

BUTTE VALLEY — Butte College men’s soccer coach Ross Sandberg tells his players that in their time at Butte College, if they want to play at the next level, they need to do 10% of the work. That 10% is succeeding in the classroom, with Sandberg knowing his players will work hard on the soccer field. The other 90%, which Sandberg considers talking with four-year programs and finding them scholarships, he will do. The Roadrunners’ men’s soccer program completed its eight-person signing class for the 2023-24 season with five players signing Wednesday. Goalkeeper Noris Iten committed to Division I ..read more

Newsom needs to look in the mirror on homelessness | Other views

by Dan Walters Calmatters

Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom reiterated one of his favorite complaints – that local government officials aren’t doing enough to reduce California’s scourge of homelessness. While renewing the annual local government grants to deal with what Californians view as one of the state’s most vexing problems, Newsom imposed two new layers of state oversight for homelessness programs. He said the Department of Housing and Community Development will keep tabs on local officials. If they are not diligent enough, they could face legal action by the Department of Justice. “What’s happen ..read more

The audition process | In the Spotlight

CHICO — I have an audition for a play on Sunday, and it got me thinking about the audition process and how actors and actresses prepare for them. It’s a challenge no matter how many auditions a person has done. Personally, I prepare by looking up the show and researching the roles and if the show is a musical, I listen to the soundtrack to familiarize myself with the songs. Once I choose a song to audition with, I practice by singing it every day leading up to the audition. I also look at the script if it’s available. Standing on a stage and singing for the director and the others who are watc ..read more

When church is a casualty of overbooked lifestyles | North State Voices

Is eavesdropping a sin, maybe akin to gossipping or lying? Does it make it worse if the person you listen in on is a priest? At least it was a benign conversation that I overheard at the farmer’s market Saturday. A man near me at the flower stall was discussing his sermon for Sunday, and I perked up because priests are interesting. When he said he was subbing at St. John’s Episcopal, I fully committed to the aforementioned possibly-a-sin. St. John’s Episcopal is my church. Now, before you get the wrong impression, I can’t claim much religion. My relationship with faith is ambiguous; I used to ..read more

Sharks coaching search: Seven names, young and (older), to ponder in San Jose

The San Jose Sharks are starting a coaching search for the second time in three years after the organization fired David Quinn after just two seasons. While Quinn was considered the favorite to get the job in July 2022, shortly after Mike Grier was named the team’s general manager, there does not appear to be a similar obvious choice this time. Instead, it seems Grier will cast a wide net when it comes to finding the Sharks’ next coach. “We’re building a list of candidates we’d like to speak to,” Grier said Wednesday, roughly an hour after Quinn’s dismissal was announced. “I don’t really have ..read more
