What families with wheelchairs need before flying
Flying is harder with wheels – we do what we can to make it easier
As with anything in life, airport security works a little differently for families with disabilities. Eventually, most frequent travelers end up looking at the benefits of Global Entry Vs. TSA PreCheck, so I wanted to share our experiences traveling with a wheelchair and medical needs.
Why you should have something in place
Security takes longer for people traveling with extra equipment, liquid medications, or supplies. Your wheelchair, your hands, and the hands of anyone pushi ..read more

Florida’s Beach Town with an Inclusion Mindset
Siesta Key Beach
The beach is probably the last place that comes to mind when planning a wheelchair accessible family vacation, but, in Florida, it shouldn’t be. Overall, Florida has been growing in inclusion in tourism as they add mobi mats and beach wheelchairs to popular beaches, and as more places are becoming Autism certified and working to incorporate varying needs into their business and tourism models.
We all know that ADA is far from meaning accessible. Which is why I’m placing Sarasota above our other wheelchair accessible Florida favor ..read more

Falls on the Reedy – just beyond the accessible trail
Greenville, South Carolina is a vibrant southern city that draws people in by both it’s situation in nature, surrounded by water falls and mountain trails, and it’s charming downtown.
We went with two main goals: beautiful trails and good ice cream. While I was nervous about the lack of accessibility information I was able to find while planning, you’ll be happy to know we excelled at both goals!
Greenville, South Carolina has plenty of accessible options to make a great getaway for wheelchair users and others with mobility nee ..read more

A Guide to Florida’s Beaches with Wheels
Beach wheelchairs are great for navigating sand!
Florida is a popular vacation destination known for its beautiful beaches, but for individuals with mobility impairments, finding a beach that is accessible can be a challenge… to say the least.
Don’t let Florida’s endless sand scare you away! While there are plenty of beaches that we still can’t access, Florida has worked hard to make sure there are beaches, in every area of the coast, that we can! Between beach wheelchairs, ramped access to the sand, mobi mats, and accessible restrooms and amenities, y ..read more

A Holiday Calendar of Wheelchair Friendly Family Events
Lights at the Star Barn Drive-Thru
I love the idea of a an activity advent calendar. Instead of a chocolate before school each morning, or a cheap toy that will be stepped on and thrown away, we do a calendar of events. Sometimes we do things at home, but the following is a list of great events for this year! Bring on the festive!
As always, all suggestions are family friendly and wheelchair accessible.

Wandering the Austrian Alps
The number one way people find my website is by searching for free vacations for disabled, so I figured I should cover that topic!
There aren’t many completely free vacation options based on disabilities, but there are loads of discounts and ways to travel for less. Most of these are specific to the U.S., because that’s where my experience is. Here’s all I know on saving money as a disabled traveler!

A better beach alternative?
Fun with the beach wheelchair at Buckroe Beach in Hampton
Hampton is just thirty minutes north of Virginia Beach. Not only does it boast the same sands and seas, but it also keeps up on the dining and fun fronts. There is plenty of wheelchair accessible family fun to be had – but without the crowds of Virginia’s namesake beach.
Check out all that we loved in the area!
Buckroe Beach and Park

City view from Belle Isle
We do the finger lakes for wine and waterfalls… Nashville for music… the Adirondacks to immerse ourselves in the outdoors. Pittsburgh is for children’s museums; Boston for history; Delaware for beaches; Orlando for the theme parks… you get the picture.
The joy of Richmond is the diversity in all it offers. We experienced vibrant city life, the great outdoors, a diverse food and wine scene, and historic buildings on lush estates – all in one region.
We were in the area for three weeks for an intensive physical therapy program for my son. I figured we’d exp ..read more

Beyond Accessible Travel
Rolling through Austria
Wonders Within Reach focuses on accessible travel for wheelchair users. I’m sure this is the case with many disabilities, but accessibility needs are only the tip of the iceberg for someone traveling with Spina bifida. Unfortunately, I can’t address the range of needs across disabilities. I do, however, know a little something about the specifics of travel with Spina bifida.
