On Friday us mutts prompted the pack out to the Peace Vigil at Bridgeview Park, followed by a peaceful protect march on the bridge. But the best part was meeting all those friendly kids!
The somber part was paying our respects to the victims and survivors of America's most recent school shooting, in Uvalde Texas.
I didn't know we'd have KIDS here!
Hey! I like kids too.
Who are you? I will lick your face.
We got to do some tricks too.
We got in the water here.
I don't usually like being on a lead, but
when a cute little girl hol ..read more

On Thursday, to celebrate Cinco do Mayo in fabulous spring weather, we headed to Bob Lake to check on this NFS campground and the Beaver Lodge Trail.
We found the road in rather snowy.
We lunched at the boat launch.
Sunny, calm, warm, no bugs. Perfect!
Then the tools came out for trail clearing.
We started out on the old RR grade.
Would have been a cool thing to have seen.
Moles over winter?
Didn't take long to find a big one across the trail.
Arly diced it up.
No problem.
A little snow still ..read more

On Sunday May 1st, we started the month on a good note. The pack loaded the dog truck with trail tools and headed down to Lake Ste Kathryn to start clearing the Deer Marsh Trail and put up a "campsite reserved" sign for Cheryl, the campground host. She'll be back in the north woods soon!
We had hoped to camp there this weekend but the forecast ended up too cool and wet for the first camp of the season. But getting out for the day was an excellent alternative!
Ya Dolly, this is one of our favorite camp grounds.
Snow was gone and trails dry in many places.

With our ongoing pattern of cool nights, we're still skiing here in spring weather. Conditions remain surprisingly good both on packed trails and out in the woods.
On Saturday morning we awoke to fog.
We heard a few rumbles of thunder last night.
It did rain some too.
Nice to still get to run on the Boundary Road Trails,
without any mud in sight!
Bridges are losing their snow coverage.
Puppies are not that brave!
Pilgrim River is up!
We were surprised to see the big rock almost under.
This section of southern exposed trail is snow free.

We had the best Easter adventures, with lots of romps out in the snow.
We didn't know why, but the 2-leggeds said
we needed to get out and do some running.
Something about too much noisy
tussling in the house.
So we headed to our favorite close-to-town yet
in the woods trail, which goes around Bass and Dry Lake.
Ya, this is shelf rock country.
We had to practice jumping up on things here.
Today we went around Dry Lake, rather than
the longer romp around Bass Lake.
Dolly was glad there were bridges over the scary creeks.

On April 8th, we packed up the dog truck to head over and up to Ely for some Easter adventures.
We even brought and used the skis!
It snowed a few inches overnight!
Dolly, you better stay close. The truck is being packed.
You don't want to get left behind!
The roads were snowy in Houghton County.
As soon as we crossed into Ontonagon County, they
were just wet.
After a lunch stop in Ashland, the
next stop was After Hours Trails in Brule!
This is such a nice chalet.
Snow was on the shallow side here,
although other areas were much better ..read more

This has been one of the better springs for getting out to ski in the past few years. This post features recent romps at Boundary Road Trails and other locations. Starring spring skiing and birds!
Do you know how scary this is for a puppy?
Dolly creeps across the first few feet of the
bridge, then sprints the rest of the way....she could
fall off and into the raging torrent below, ya know!
Getting to look like spring. Recent ice storms
really stripped off the pine boughs and needles.
Corn snow made for surprisingly good skiing.
This was in Churning Rapids ..read more

On Sunday April 3rd we hopped in the dog truck to have a trail adventure down at Lake Ste Kathryn.
We started at the north end trail head.
This is the Deer Marsh trail.
I think paws are allowed!
Wally is teaching Dolly fun new things to do every day.
OK Dolly, let's go!
Not surprisingly, dead spruce have
been falling over the trail this winter.
The 2-leggeds had to wear snow shoes,
since the deep snow wasn't very crusty any more.
I bravely jumped up on the railing...see?
Don't even need the board walk to cross when
you use a ..read more

Can you believe it? It's been 5 long years since we last rented a yurt in the spring in the Porkies. With that in mind, we'll consider this our Gromit Memorial Yurt Spring Camp Trip!
Our short little adventure was from Sunday March 27th to Tuesday March 29th.
Dolly! This is Union Bay.
Finally! Me and Sandy carried packs while
Arly pulled the pulk. Little Dolly didn't have
to carry anything. Gyp!
Let's go look at the Union River. The river is up!
Dolly stayed safely away. Puppies have a natural
fear of the water...we'll make a swimmer out of her ..read more

In memory of Gromit the Trail Mutt
3/13/2007 - 1/5/2022
In 2005, our beloved old retired working border collie OJ had passed away, leaving us dogless for the first time in years. Then in May of 2007, Sandy spotted an ad in the Mining Gazette for "Free Puppies, border collie mix." Arly reluctantly caved in to go and look at the one remaining puppy of the litter. As they say, the rest is history! Little 7 week old Gromit came home and promptly joined us on a wide array of adventures.
The 1st time getting into our house. It was scary!
She'd never been in a house before....or a c ..read more
