A Columbia man was charged Thursday with felony second-degree murder for two October fentanyl overdoses.
Those two are among a growing number of opioid overdoses around the nation and in Mid-Missouri.

Tavares Eric Patrick II, 27, was arrested by Columbia police around 5 p.m. Wednesday. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of selling drugs.
He has an initial court hearing in Boone County on Friday at 1 p.m.

A Boone County Judge will decide Friday if a juvenile suspected to be involved with killing a woman at her home back in May will be tried as an adult.
The hearing is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Boone County Courthouse. The judge will go through a certification hearing to determine if the juvenile will be tried as an adult.
Back in May, officers responded to a robbery in progress call and found 72-year-old Janet Jago shot in her home on East Tayside Circle. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

The City of Columbia has been considering regulation of short-term rental properties for a while now.
The city held a public hearing Thursday for residents to comment on the proposal, which would limit how often residences can be rented out on services such as VRBO and AirBnB.
Any new regulation would have to pass both the Planning and Zoning Commission and Columbia City Council.

A ceremony was held Thursday at the plaza at the Boone County Courthouse to mark the 82nd anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
The ceremony began at 11:55 a.m., the time of the attacks on Dec. 7, 1941, in Central Standard Time.
The event included speakers and a message from Secretary Of The Navy Carlos Del Toro.
The event was bookended with a bell toll for the ships lost during the attack, those lost in each service branch, as well as civilians.
Navy veteran Kenneth Fields spoke about the important role the Navy played in the war.

A Columbia woman is seeking a class-action lawsuit against the City of Columbia over fees paid by customers for recycling pickup after the city suspended the service.
The petition-- filed on Tuesday by Christine Gardener -- alleges a breach of contract by the city, as well as unjust enrichment. The lawsuit cites the city code: "As part of its basic service to residential customers, as set out in section 22-159, the city will also provide weekly pickup of recyclable material," and states charges for the service are not taxes.

A Columbia man was charged Thursday with felony second-degree murder for two October fentanyl overdoses.
The victims reportedly thought the powdery drug was cocaine, according to a police account of the investigation.
Tavares Eric Patrick II, 27, was arrested by Columbia police around 5 p.m. Wednesday. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of selling drugs.
Charges were filed Thursday over two overdose deaths that occurred on Oct. 13.

The City of Columbia's Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday to hear what citizens have to say about the proposed short-term rental regulations.
The meeting will be held at the City Council Chambers at 701 E. Broadway at 7 p.m.
The proposed regulations include a three "tier" structure for rental limitations, new specific and clearer definitions to the proposal, revisions to permitted use qualifications and specific standards.

Boone County is planning something new -- offering subsidized childcare for some of its workers.
The county plans to include a daycare center as part of a planned regional law enforcement training center. The commission approved funding last week.

Columbia Solid Waste will hold an open-house style meeting next week about potential requirements on roll cart storage, according to a Wednesday press release.
The release states that the city is looking for public input on roll cart storage at residences between collection days. The meeting is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 at City Hall. Comments can also be made online until Dec. 31.

A Columbia nurse and union member says he's running for Missouri's 50th House District to make sure it stays in Democratic hands.
Gregg Bush said Wednesday in a statement on social media that he is running for the Democratic nomination next August in the district that covers much of south Columbia. He has earned the endorsement of incumbent Democrat Doug Mann, who said in October that he will not seek a second term, citing mental health issues.
Bush asked in his announcement for support to "make sure this seat stays in safe hands."
