NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Christopher Newport scored a run in the second and two more unearned runs in the fifth and held off Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in the first game of the best-of-three Super Regional round of the NCAA Division III softball tournament at Captains Park.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A new traffic report shows Hampton Roads crash rate is higher than other metro areas in Virginia, with the crash fatality rate growing over the last decade.
The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization cites the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, which tallied more than 26,000 crashes in Hampton Roads in 2021, making Hampton Roads' crash rate higher than Northern Virginia, Richmond and Roanoke. Among those crashes, more than 16,000 people were injured and 179 people died.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - One man has been shot, and another person described as a possible suspect is barricaded inside an apartment following a shooting on Turlington Road in Newport News late Thursday night, Newport News Police said.
Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of Turlington Road around 10:05 p.m., and when officers arrived, they found a man outside suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said he was taken to a local hospital "with injuries that do not appear life-threatening."

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia State Police's Bureau of Criminal Investigation is on the scene of an interstate shooting that took place earlier Thursday on Interstate 64 westbound at mile marker 253 near Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News.
Virginia State Police said the scene is currently fluid, and information is still coming in. Traffic should not be affected, State Police said, "but unfortunately, we have vehicles that are slowing down to observe the incident."

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Hampton man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection to a February homicide on Newsome Drive in Newport News, police said.
Newport News Police said that officers had responded Feb. 7 to the 4300 block of Newsome Drive in reference to a welfare check when they found a woman, later identified to be Nekaybaw Ernestine Scott, 26, in her apartment.
The chief medical examiner had determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the shoulder and torso, police said.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Police held a car etching service Saturday afternoon.
The event brought out more than 100 people to get personalized vehicle identification numbers, or VINs, put on their cars in an attempt to prevent car thefts.
"It's for catalytic converter engraving and window etching, putting the VIN on the windows," said Detective Antonia Love.
First, spray paint was put on people's catalytic converters, followed by a VIN.
Love said different colors of the paint coincides with what part of Hampton Roads the car comes from.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A Newport News man pleaded guilty Thursday to receipt of child pornography.
Court documents revealed that Richard Jerod Whitley, Jr., 37, was engaged in the online trading of child sexual material. His collection included content with toddlers and infants engaged in sexually explicit conduct as well as sadistic and masochistic material.
Whitley was an elementary school bus driver and school aide at an elementary school in Colonial Heights.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A man from Newport News accused of sexually assaulting a child nearly three decades ago has been granted bond.
A judge granted a $5,000 secured bond for 81-year-old Daniel Landis during a hearing Thursday morning.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- A person bitten by a still at-large gray pit bull/terrier-type dog in Newport News last Thursday evening may have been exposed to rabies, health officials say.
The Peninsula Health District is strongly recommending that person seek medical care for the potential exposure, which could turn deadly.
