Attorneys on Tuesday described different dynamics of the Haskell family life on the seventh day of the felony child sex assault trial of James Glenn Haskell, 42, formerly a lawyer in Vacaville. The young woman then admitted she was “closer to the defendant” than her other siblings, two sisters and a brother ..read more

But it would turn out to be a different cherished family memory that influenced her career. Growing up, Orozco would go to parties at her aunts’ house and hear all her uncles in the garage screaming and celebrating boxing, notably the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. “I remember seeing at a young age that boxing really brings people together,” recalls Orozco. “There’s an energy there that’s unlike any sport.” Despite her love for the sport, Orozco never th ..read more

Vacaville High School baseball coach Stu Clary says his team has two goals each year — win the next game and make the school proud. The school has to be thrilled with Monday’s 10-5 win over Will C. Wood, giving the Bulldogs at least a share of the Monticello Empire League title. With Vacaville winning the season series against Rodriguez and Vanden, the Bulldogs are guaranteed the No. 1 spot out of the MEL once the postseason begins. “It never gets old, but it’s never the same,” Clary said. “Each year is a little different. We cherish every win, but this is what makes fall ball and all the time ..read more

The songs and screams of Skid Row will soon fill Vanden’s Little Theatre with the opening of “Little Shop of Horrors” on April 25. Much like the Skid Row flower shop and its infamous plant, audiences will find the small theater housing an unexpected, larger-than-life musical spectacle. Taking cues from the off-broadway production, Director Jerald Bolden knew he wanted to bring Skid Row off the stage right into the aisles. “From the top of the show, it’s about getting this tiny shop and Skid Row feeling in the audience’s face,” said Bolden. “To pull them into the action.” Posing as various Skid ..read more

David Bernstine batted .625 in his freshman season for Vallejo High School, so topping that for his sophomore season would be quite impressive. With a .629 average through 43 plate appearances, he’s doing just that. Bernstine collected five hits in six at-bats last week to lead the Redhawks to two one-run wins. Two of those hits were triples, accounting for three RBI — and the nod as the Times-Herald Athlete of the Week. “I’ve been focusing on sitting back on the ball and taking the pitch to right field field,” Bernstine said. “I’ve sprayed some hits to left this year but I’ve tried to stay wi ..read more

Times-Herald
by Richard Bammer

Vacaville-based singer and pianist Ramalna Vieira specializes in fado, the traditional Portuguese folk music likened to American blues, but lately she and her backing quartet expanded their song list in surprising ways. In the past six months, the ensemble’s repertoire, while still showcasing contemporary fado, has folded in songs to reflect “Basia to Sade meets Santana meets Portugal,” she wrote in an email to The Reporter. This new tapestry of sounds will be in full effect from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday in the Speakeasy at Makse Restaurant on Main Street in downtown Vacaville. She called the res ..read more
