A man who pointed a weapon at officers was shot and died at a nearby hospital early Saturday morning, according to Mesquite police.
Mesquite police say officers were called to the 3700 block of Nabholtz Lane at around 10 p.m. Friday for reports of a man with a gun in the street pointing the weapon at others in the area.
By the time officers arrived, police say they were told the man had returned home and officers heard gunshots inside his home.
Mesquite Police Tactical Team was called in and police say crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with the man.

The Smith family used to have a game room loft in their suburban Mesquite home, until the pandemic started and their daughter Madison started painting.
“We’re like, we could put some on the wall,” Madison Smith said laughing. “That’s when it turned into a studio!”
The 18-year-old is a straight-A student at Dallas Christian School. While others used the pandemic to learn how to bake bread, she taught herself to paint by watching YouTube.

A driver is in custody after leading police on a chase through parts of Dallas County Thursday morning.
The chase reportedly began at about 10:50 a.m. along Interstate 20 in Mesquite and ended about a half hour later in Lancaster.
At least once in the pursuit, the driver was reported to be going the wrong way.
The driver was taken into custody in Lancaster near the intersection of Hulette Avenue and Wintergreen Road.

A man running from a traffic stop is in custody after leading police on a chase in a stolen box truck Monday afternoon, police say.
According to Mesquite Police, officers tried to pull over a woman along eastbound Interstate 30 near Broadway at about 2:05 p.m.
The woman initially refused to pull over but eventually stopped along I-30 near Hunnicut Drive and was taken into custody. A male passenger in her car ran from the traffic stop and tried to get away on foot.

The freezing temperatures change the pace of services for nonprofits across North Texas.
Some of the North Texas Food Bank’s partner food pantries, like Sharing Life Community Outreach, have provided earlier grocery distributions to its clients.
“Having our hub here in Mesquite, we serve a little bit under 100 other nonprofits who will pick up food from our location and distribute to about 35 ZIP codes in our area,” Maria Mills with Sharing Life said. “Unfortunately, with the weather, we called everybody that could come in today and get food while we’re closed over the next couple of days.”

The westbound lanes of Interstate 30 in Mesquite are shut down due to a double fatal crash on Tuesday morning.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. on I-30W at Big Town Boulevard when an eighteen wheeler collided with a pickup truck.
According to officials, one person was found dead at the scene.
A second person was transported to a local area hospital where they were later pronounced dead, officials said.
As of 11 a.m., the interstate had not been reopened as crews continue to investigate the crash.

A jewelry store inside Town East Mall in Mesquite was burglarized over the weekend after police say someone broke through concrete and sheetrock walls to steal more than $2 million in jewelry and property.
Mesquite Police said they were called to the mall at about 11 a.m. Saturday to investigate a burglary at American Jewelers after an employee arrived to find a hole in the wall and a large amount of jewelry missing.
The jewelry store is on the mall’s ground level and shares interior walls with a former Sears department store and a loading dock.

‘I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO‘
When Brad Carter’s water, sewer, and trash bill rose from around $77 in September, $462 in October and $970 in November, primarily in water use charges, the Mesquite resident said he was baffled.
“I live by myself,” said Carter. “I don’t have a swimming pool, I don’t have any aquariums. It’s always been on average, $60, $70 a month, when all of a sudden…boom. It’s outrageous.”

Police in Dallas, Mesquite and Grand Prairie are working together to solve a crime spree by two men and one woman driving a high-dollar stolen pickup.
It started when NBC 5 aired a story Thursday night about a break-in at a Grand Prairie tattoo shop early Monday morning. Surveillance video showed the three thieves pulling up in a black pickup truck.
“That’s my truck! There they are!” Jeff Folsom said he thought when he saw the story.

This is a big week for a nonprofit in Mesquite working to fight hunger. It will debut a new service that will get food to clients ’round the clock.
“We’re trying to find alternative ways to get food to people and how can we do that since it’s not feasible for us to staff 24/7?,” said Jacob Taylor, Director of Operations for Sharing Life.
