Empty Bowl Gourmet Noodle Bar Celebrates 10 Years of Thai Noodling
The Santa Barbara Independent

At a quick glance, the success story of Empty Bowl Gourmet Noodle Bar can be accurately appreciated as the triumph of a tasty Thai menu reliant on fresh ingredients, handmade recipes, and a sharply honed efficiency that’s mandated by a tiny kitchen and the fast pace of visitors to the Santa Barbara Public Market. Upon the eatery’s opening in April 2014, the food was instantly and almost unanimously deemed delicious; the menu was served to consistently high standards; and the kitchen was as transparent as it gets, every move visible by diners perched along the wraparound bar. “We found the righ ..read more

Edible Insect Art Show at UC Santa Barbara Displays Culinary Diversity and Sustainability
The Santa Barbara Independent

This article was originally published in UCSB’s ‘The Current‘.  There are over 2,000 different types of edible insects, and each one has a different flavor profile. There can be subtleties too, such as, if you feed them mint, they’ll take on a minty flavor, or some just taste more meaty and fatty like bacon, while others hit a bit lighter, in a way comparable to shellfish.  “‘What does an edible insect taste like?’ That’s like saying, ‘What does meat taste like?’ But the taste of chicken compared to lamb is very, very different,” said Mackenzie Wade, a doctoral candidate in anthropol ..read more

Santa Barbara Sobering Center Posts 400 Percent Increase in Intakes
The Santa Barbara Independent

For years, the sober center off Calle Real near the county’s Social Services campus in Noleta might have been the best-kept secret in all of Santa Barbara. Few people knew it existed; even fewer knew what it did. And with a name as dauntingly opaque as “CREDO 47,” that’s little wonder. In recent months, however, that’s turned around. According to center manager Brian Dalley, the number of people seeking help at the center has quadrupled in the past few months: “When I started in September, we had maybe 20 people a month; now it’s 70 to 80.” According to Dalley, the center has the capacity to h ..read more

Our Love of Fresh Food in Plastic = Tajiguas Mess
The Santa Barbara Independent
by Indy Staff

This photo was taken at a local grocery store. I think it tells a powerful story about what’s happening at Tajiguas, the South County’s landfill. The plastic container invasion of produce and prepared foods has taken over the fresh food aisles in all grocery stores countywide and the state. (Trader Joe’s, the perennial favorite, is a huge offender — sorry TJs, love ya but gotta call you out.) Is it a coincidence that the landfill has bloated since plastic containers for food were no longer recyclable in Santa Barbara (and pretty much everywhere) because China refused to take our absolutely obs ..read more
