A bill filed this week in the Colorado legislature would change the makeup of the state’s Air Quality Control Commission as the legislation’s sponsors try to increase protections for low-income neighborhoods and communities of color, which bear the brunt of pollution. When Stephen Varela became president in 2016 of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2430 in southern Colorado, former union officers say one of the first things he did was ask the bank for a debit card for the union’s account. One man is dead after a Friday night shooting in Pueblo and officers are investigating the case as a homicide. Pueblo police officers responded to reports of shots fired just before 10 p.m. Friday in the 2100 block of North Main Street, according to a Friday news release from the Pueblo Police Department. A child’s remains were found in a metal container filled with concrete inside a Pueblo storage unit, and Pueblo police are searching for two children not seen since 2018. A half dozen companies operating in the state informed the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment of their layoff plans as January came to a close. An election tampering charge filed against a Pueblo man accused of removing an official seal and pulling a USB port from a voting machine during the June 2022 primaries has been dismissed.
