Alternates are now being selected.

Two carpentry classes from Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy are ensuring Tuscaloosa Magnet School – Middle gets a brand new greenhouse and picnic tables.
It’s part of a community passion project for a group of eighth graders.
Construction began this week, but the project’s been in the works since September. The goal is building items future middle school students can use for learning.

MONTGOMERY (AP) — The Alabama Supreme Court on Wednesday authorized the execution of a man convicted of killing a delivery driver who stopped at an ATM.
Justices granted the Alabama attorney general’s request to authorize an execution date for Keith Edmund Gavin, 64. Gov. Kay Ivey will set the day of the execution, which will be carried out by lethal injection.
Gavin was convicted of capital murder for the 1998 shooting death of William Clinton Clayton, Jr. in Cherokee County. Prosecutors said Clayton, a delivery driver, stopped at an ATM in downtown Centre for money to t ..read more

MONTGOMERY (AP) — Alabama plans to buy the Foley Beach Express Bridge and eliminate tolls to drive across it, state and local officials announced Thursday.
Gov. Kay Ivey and the mayors of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach announced an agreement for the Alabama Department of Transportation to purchase the bridge from the Baldwin County Bridge Company for $57 million. The thoroughfare is a private toll bridge that provides an alternate route to state beaches.
Ivey’s office said in a press release that the bridge will become toll free as soon as the deal closes.

Who’s Gary? That’s what the Tuscaloosa Police Department is working on finding out after a man called the department’s non-emergency line, said his name was Gary and claimed he was gonna shoot his family in his apartment at Aspen Village apartments off Skyland Boulevard.
Tuscaloosa Police spokesperson Stephanie Taylor said that phone call came around 9 p.m. and included what the dispatcher described as audible gunshots

The Northport Community Center held their ribbon cutting this week as they re-opened the center.
It had been part of the community for at least the past 70 years and was a favorite gathering spot for local senior citizens for their group dances.
But last summer, city council members discussed selling the center and park to the Beeker Property Group for redevlopment.
City leaders ultimately decided not to proceed with that agreement and decided instead to keep the property for city use.
Northport Mayor John Hinton said they will make good use of the center now.

It won’t be a problem until next spring, but one local business is worried about the potential impact a major bridge replacement will have on its clientele.
The Woolsey Finnell Bridge along U.S. Highway 82 crosses the Black Warrior River between Jack Warner Parkway and Rice Mine Road and will take about three years to replace.
The Alabama Department of Transportation said the 1.42-mile, $125 million project will include ramp modifications at Jack Warner Parkway and Campus Drive alongside three lanes in each direction and bicycle and pedestrian lanes.
