Best known for its stunning ocean and volcano vistas and topped off by the iconic 1901 Russian Orthodox church overlooking the harbor from the bluff above, Ninilchik is a great choice for those who love to have beautiful vistas almost every day. Though services like a large shopping center require a drive of 45 minutes or so north or south, there are plenty of small shops were you could pick up milk or sugar to get you through until shopping day. Situated between the Ninilchik and Deep Creek rivers, this is a fisherman’s paradise, with tractors available on the beach to launch your boat into t ..read more

At the turquoise headwaters of the mighty Kenai River and nestled in the mountains, this community is the perfect choice for those who want to “get away from it all.” With a population less than 300, there is plenty of opportunity to reflect and relax in peace. Hiking trails are numerous, the fishing is excellent, and there is even the opportunity to prospect for gold. Cooper Landing is still on the road system, an hour in either direction will get you to the neighboring towns of Soldotna or Seward if you need supplies. Affectionately referred to as a “small drinking village with a fishing problem,” Homer is a great choice for those who love the ocean, the arts, and prefer a little milder weather. It’s easy to bike down to the world famous Homer Spit and watch the boats come in at the harbor, or watch the sea otters play in the bay. With a population of just under 5000 people, this city is smaller than neighboring Soldotna or Kenai but still has the convenience of in-town living. With a little more industrial feel than neighboring Soldotna, the city of Kenai is still a great choice for those wanting “Alaska” while still having easy access to shopping and city conveniences. Situated on the mouth of the great Kenai River, this city offers stunning mountain vistas (featuring views of three active volcanoes), a commercial airport, an active theater scene, a baseball team, and a great opportunity to participate in the annual subsistence salmon harvest (locally referred to as dip netting). Kenai is a hub for both the fishing industry and the oil and gas industry. Schools Mo ..read more

Why not start with the town you grew up in? At a population less than 800, Kasilof is a great place to choose should you want some space, privacy, and a good commute distance to Soldotna or Kenai. Services are limited to a small general store, gas station, post office and school. Outdoor activities abound. The Kasilof River is great for salmon fishing – not as famous as the Kenai, but often less crowded. Several lakes and creeks offer great trout fishing. Established trails to the Caribou Hills in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge offer wintertime snow machining activities, and Kasilof also h ..read more
