‘The wild, wild West’: Shootings bedevil Alameda County highways, despite statewide decline
Mercury News » Fremont
by Jakob Rodgers, Harriet Blair Rowan
14h ago
More than once a week last year, bullets from rolling gunbattles, road rage-fueled shootings and seemingly unprovoked attacks flew on Alameda County freeways at a frequency far outpacing most of the state, according to an analysis of highway patrol data by this news organization. Often, innocent motorists — and children — are caught in the cross fire. Sometimes, the shootings turn deadly. Rarely are they solved. While encouraging signs abound elsewhere in the state, the scourge of freeway shootings remains persistent in the East Bay, where the problem in Alameda County appears to be just as ba ..read more

Mercury News » Fremont
by Lisa M. Krieger

U.S. health officials are closely monitoring the recent leap of avian flu from birds to cattle — and earlier this month, to a Texas dairy farmer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stresses the current public health risk is low — the virus isn’t known to spread among people or through the food supply, is rarely caught from exposure to infected animals, and where human infections have occurred, is often mild and manageable. But the leap of the H5N1 influenza strain, widespread among wild fowl and a regular threat to domestic poultry, into cattle was unexpected, and a worrisome devel ..read more
