Unique park a natural fit for Arlington

Thanks to a curious family and a determined group of volunteers, Arlington residents can find a peaceful park alongside a busy thoroughfare in the heart of the city. Converting a former plant nursery into the O.S. Gray Natural Area seems like a logical step, but getting there required a path as winding and extensive as the trails that circle the 20-acre retreat located minutes from downtown Arlington and the expanse of the University of Texas at Arlington. The city-owned park, 2021 W. Abram St., grew from a query by the young daughter of Arlington residents Kevin and Carrie Donovan, who regula ..read more

For the first time, baseball fans who want to sample food local to Arlington – can now do that at every Texas Rangers home game this season. The Arlington Eats partnership – the same one that launched Hurtado Barbecue into a standalone concession location last season – is planning to rotate among eight local eateries that will split all 81 home games. The idea has been tested on weekend games for the past two years with a smaller group of restaurants. This year, each establishment will have about nine home games to serve food in the Lexus Club and near section 101 in the main concourse. Prince ..read more

Tucked into a small shop in Mansfield’s historic downtown, the Flying Squirrel emits a warm, homey feel as soon as you walk in the door. Small tables are slipped into the corners, while long tables give patrons a chance to work, visit, or get to know new people sharing their space. The World Cup in Arlington: First a Loss, Then a Win-Win
Arlington Today | Arlington News

Arlington won the World Cup sweepstakes as a finalist. Then lost it. Then won it back. I should explain. MetLife Stadium, the open-air multi-purpose venue in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the National Football League’s New York Giants and Jets host home games, was awarded the grand prize of hosting the finals of what is perhaps the world’s biggest sporting event – 32 nations ravenously competing against each other for the right to be crowned soccer champion. How big is the FIFA Men’s World Cup? So gigantic that for the first time, the tournament will span three countries, with games in Me ..read more

Arlington Today | Arlington News

So here we go again. Arlington ISD has another superintendent hire in its clutches. Let’s see if they hold on to this one. Dr. Matt Smith, from Belton ISD, an 18-school district sandwiched between Round Rock and Temple, was named the lone finalist, which means the job is his to take. Or not. Let’s recap the last time we were in this spot. AISD’s Board of Trustees on May 4 offered the gig to Gregory-Portland ISD Superintendent Dr. Michelle Cavazos, who was all set to arrive in Arlington when she made an about-face after a counteroffer she couldn’t refuse. Texas state law mandates a 21-day waiti ..read more

Silver Lining Around Cowboys Loss
Arlington Today | Arlington News
by Richard Greene

While the Cowboys season again ended in disappointment, now is a good time to take a look at the silver lining beyond the wins and losses.   Arlington’s substantial economic benefit from being the team’s host city transcends what happens on the playing field.   AT&T Stadium has 80,000 seats and every one of them is sold out for every game before the season begins.   Another 20,000 or so show up with standing room only tickets a couple of hours before kickoff to get the best possible location in the concourse level end zone plaza areas. (WFAA News)   All of these 100,000 ..read more

Arlington enters the New Year hosting the nation’s World Series championship team. We’ll be celebrating it throughout the coming months and especially on Opening Day of March 28. That’s when the World Series banner will be proudly raised in its permanent home at Globe Life Field. And, regardless of whether or not the Rangers repeat the feat, it is a first-time triumph for the team that’s been ours for 52 years. There are uncountable tipping points in that five-decades of our history with the team – some well known and others that many have never realized. I’ll share the first of those of my ex ..read more
