Six people from Sri Lanka, including a mother and four young children, were knifed to death in the Canadian capital Ottawa late on Wednesday, police said on Thursday, rocking a country where mass murders are rare. A Sri Lankan father who survived the mass murder of his family in Canada said he returned home from work on Wednesday to find his wife and four young children had been killed. Xinhua – Fifty cruise ships will be calling at Sri Lankan ports from February to April, state media reported on Sunday quoting B.H.R. Sariffo Deen, director general of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Sariffo Deen said most of the cruise ships will call at Colombo harbor, and some will also anchor in Hambantota and Trincomalee harbors as well. Israel’s economy shrank by far more than expected in the wake of conflict with Hamas in Gaza, according to official figures. Gross domestic product (GDP) – a key measure of a country’s economic health – fell by 19% on an annualised basis in the fourth quarter of 2023. The suspected leader of the notorious criminal gang known as ‘Ava’ group, which has committed various crimes including extortion in Jaffna, has been arrested by police. The arrest was made by officers of the Walana Anti- Vice Unit at a residence in the Mt. Lavinia area, believed to be owned by a 72-year-old female. Several inmates and an army soldier have reportedly been injured in a clash between two groups at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre, police reported. According to the Welikanda Police, the injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Welikanda Hospital, while 34 inmates have been arrested in connection with the incident.
