HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — The Board of Education has approved six new lab schools, three of which have ties to either Hampton Roads or Western Tidewater. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has been a champion of lab schools as a way of improving secondary education in the state.

WINDSOR, N.C. (WNCT) -- The Bertie County Sheriff's Office has arrested three teens in connection with a shooting that injured a man back in March.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said three teens were taken into custody. They have been charged in the March 31 shooting of a man, who was not identified. The teens have since been taken to the Pitt Regional Juvenile Center in Greenville.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- Thomas Cervantes was sentenced on Friday to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to producing child sexual abuse material, a release states.

Cervantes, of Virginia Beach, used social media platforms to manipulate victims into sending sexually explicit content. Cervantes was found to have shared a video on social media of himself assaulting a minor. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Friday kicked off the first day of Audacy’s Oceanfront Concerts.
A mix of local and national artists will perform throughout the weekend.
Audacy ‘Oceanfront Concerts’ set to start this weekend
Local acts on the 17th and 24th streets stages will perform from noon to 5 pm everyday. The main talent will perform on the sand by Neptune’s Park starting at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A juvenile was injured after a shooting in Portsmouth on Friday evening, police said.
The Portsmouth Police responded to a shooting on the 30 block of Farragut Street around 6:10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound.
At this time the severity of injuries and information regarding a suspect have not been released.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — With year-round cruising from the Carnival Sunshine coming next year, Norfolk’s cruise terminal is about to see an influx of traffic.
But with that increased traffic comes the need for updates, renovations and additions at Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, and Norfolk's City Council took another step this week toward making those upgrades after approving designs for the $12 million project.

SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — This weekend, hundreds of riders are gearing up for Tour de Cure. It's a ride to help raise money in the fight to end diabetes.
Set-up is already underway at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield and people are coming from all over to take part in the event.
George Desser and his wife traveled all the way from West End, North Carolina for this weekend's Tour de Cure event in Smithfield. Both his parents and his grandmother had type two diabetes, and he said he was diagnosed with it about 20 years ago.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- A man who stole a Chevrolet Camaro from a Norfolk car dealership and crashed it during a police pursuit has been sentenced to prison time.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded to a residential fire on Lafayette Boulevard on Friday afternoon, officials said.
Crews were dispatched around 2:40 p.m. and arrived to find smoke and fire coming from a second-floor window. Crews began an offensive attack, and the fire was under control just before 3 p.m.
