ANTIOCH — The Contra Costa District Attorney penned a letter to Antioch leaders voicing “serious concerns” and warning of possible future criminal prosecution after learning three elected officials may have held a secret meeting at the mayor’s home to discuss electoral redistricting. Ultimately, prosecutors determined a Brown Act violation couldn’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The Jan. 4 letter, signed by DA Diana Becton and the prosecutor in charge of public corruption, says the investigation concluded that there was a private meeting between Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe, Mayor Pro Te ..read more

What needs to go right for Oakland A’s to have successful season on the field in 2024

We still don’t know where the A’s will play after this season, but what will a successful 2024 on the field look like for Oakland? Any amount of success on the field won’t do anything to heal the fans’ broken hearts or diminish their rage toward ownership. And after going a combined 104 games under .500 the past two seasons, simply no longer being mentioned in the same breath of the 1962 New York Mets and their modern-record 120 losses would be an improvement. After losing 100 games in a season just once in their first 54 years in the Bay Area, the A’s have suffered that indignity in each of t ..read more

Times have never been better for baseball prospect watchers. When Buster Posey first joined the Giants late in the 2009 season, he was one of 204 players to debut in the majors that season. Last season, 261 players appeared in their first MLB games – a year after there were a record-setting 303 debuts. More top prospects than ever are being fast-tracked, in large part because of rules intended to discourage teams from manipulating service time to stall players’ arbitration and free agent clocks. Here’s a look at some of the prospects fans should know for Opening Day and to keep an eye out for ..read more

SACRAMENTO — Within some seedy enclaves of Northern California, Brian Nehring is known as a master of disguise for the Drug Enforcement Administration with the uncanny ability to convince seasoned and suspicious drug dealers that he’s not a cop. But this sly government chameleon may now be trapped by his own apparent sweet tooth. The lawyer for one of three Aryan Brotherhood members facing racketeering charges believes he may have caught Nehring lying under oath to cover up the eating of two donuts in 2019. Before a grand jury five years ago, Nehring, a DEA special agent, testified he ate donu ..read more

OAKLAND — Facing the public here for the first time, new police Chief Floyd Mitchell leaned away from the city’s tricky problems around crime and policing, instead focusing part of an introductory address Wednesday on his experiences growing up in Kansas City, Missouri. He took care to note the three street intersections where he lived as a kid with a single mother and two older sisters, tracing an upbringing in a “large, diverse city” that he described as having “many of the same social, economic and violent crime issues facing Oakland.” “Both my parents worked shift jobs,” Mitchell said, rea ..read more

More than 200 students at DCP Alum Rock High School, a small charter school in San Jose, will have to transfer when the campus closes this summer — a victim of declining enrollment and a hefty budget deficit it cannot overcome and keep the campus open. Downtown College Prep – which operates the high school and three other campuses in San Jose – voted on the closure earlier this month. “I know once the board said ‘yes, we recommend closing it,’ we took a breath…and once we walked out that door, it was just (a blow),” said Madison Christian Sumpter, a junior at DCP Alum Rock High School. Ready or not, here come the Oakland A’s fans. As early as noon on Thursday, fans are expected to begin lining up to enter the parking lot at the Coliseum, but many won’t actually buy a ticket to the A’s Opening Night game against the Cleveland Guardians, a sign of protest against the team’s pending move to Las Vegas in 2028. While 26,805 people went to the team’s opening game at the Coliseum last year, almost as many are planning to show up to the parking lot Thursday while boycotting the actual game, said Bryan Johansen, founder of A’s fan group Last Dive Bar and one of the organizers of the ..read more
