North Greenville University, a private, Baptist liberal arts college in Tigerville, recently unveiled its new athletics mascot, Trailblazers.  Depicting a red fox, the mascot’s name pays homage to the school’s location in the foothills of Greenville County near Tugaloo Trail and the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. Clemson University alumna and NASA Johnson Space Center director Vanessa Wyche visited the college April 29 to sign a Space Act Agreement. It’s a rare thing when one of our native shrubs growing in the wild outshines its horticultural counterpart, but flame azalea does just that. On a narrow ridge of Horse Mountain in the Jocassee Gorges there is a particularly attractive flame azalea bush. I can’t walk past it without stopping for a moment to muse over the natural beauty of its abundant clusters of bright orange flowers. Cynthia Sayer, a singer and banjo player based in New York City, will make a pair of appearances at Sigal Music Museum at 516 Buncombe St. in Greenville, beginning May 2. Sayer will perform her Hot Banjo Show May 2 at 7:30 p.m. and participate in the museum’s Distinguished Lecture Series May 5 at 3 p.m., where she will discuss the topic “The Unexpected Journey Of Jazz Banjo.” Admission to Sayer’s performance is $5 per student and $20 per general admission ticket, while her lecture is free to attend. In honor of its ninth anniversary, the Greenville Center for Creative Arts will launch a monthly performance arts series May 3 with “I.mpact(s),” three 15- to 20-minute interactive dance shows. A new location for Bon Secours Piedmont Orthopedics is opening on Halton Road in Greenville.  The new facility at 180 Halton Road will treat patients dealing with hand and spine issues. Joe Pazdan was a Greenville native and a founding member of McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture. Pazdan lost his battle to glioblastoma (brain cancer) in April 2023.
