Voters in March approved adding language to the city’s charter that said the city may ask for proof of identification when voting at in-person polling locations in city elections beginning in 2026. The measure was put on ballots by the council’s four-member conservative majority. Over the years, the log cabin has witnessed numerous eras in the city’s history – from the oil boom of the 1920s, to World War II, to the arrival of tract housing starting in the 1950s – and has become a beloved local landmark along the way, scouting representatives say. Real estate investor Debra Falese called a landmark Realtor commission settlement “horrible” because it requires home shoppers to sign contracts with their agents. That could leave buyers “locked into” working with unreliable agents, the Huntington Beach property owner said. New homeowner Morgan Hedrick worries the settlement will make it harder for future buyers if their broker fees come out of pocket instead of from the sale of the home. And one home shopper outside an open house in Downey was visibly angry, saying the settlement does nothing to help the consumer. “Now I have to pay my own a ..read more

A Sunset Beach-Surfside sand replenishment project aimed at providing a needed supply to north Orange County’s eroding beaches came up short, providing about a third less than expected. Recently, Newport Beach leaders decided what Cal Cities has to offer no longer fits local goals. So, when the annual $24,000 renewal for membership in the organization also known as the League of California Cities came around this month, the Newport Beach City Council voted 5-2 to step away. Councilmembers Erik Weigand and Robyn Grant thought it was worth staying with the league to “keep a seat at the table,” but like their colleagues weren’t happy with some of its recent decision-making, they said. Cal Cities lists a robust roster of member cities from throughout the state. Newport Beach had ..read more
