Trash is flying through the air. Dust is pummeling Denverites’ eyes. And windchimes are having way too much fun. It’s another windy day in Denver and across the Front Range. Through Monday night, the National Weather Service warns gusts of wind could reach up to 60 miles per hour, and they could hit up to 75 miles per hour in parts of the mountains and foothills. If you were planning on lighting up the grill or littering a cigarette, don’t. Fire risks are up, and high winds make it easier for flames to spread. If you’re headed into the mountains, above 9,000 feet, you can expect to see snow bl ..read more

Construction is underway at the old Shelby’s Bar and Grill site, at 18th and Glenarm streets, where Canadian developer Amacon is building a two-tower building with 461 for-sale units. The project, dubbed Upton Residencies, will be the largest condo project in Denver since 2009, a sign that the long-frozen market, that developers say has been slowed by construction defects legislation, might be thawing a bit. The homes, a mix of studios, one-, two- and three-bedrooms, start in the low-$400,000s, well below the median price of a home in the metro. But there will also be penthouses for those who ..read more

There’s a stone historic marker tucked behind a concrete wall at the west end of the 8th Avenue bridge. You would never notice it if you didn’t know where to look. “Camp Weld. Established September 1861 for Colorado Civil War Volunteers,” it reads. “Headquarters against Indians.” You won’t get much more from the inscription, but there’s deeper history in this odd place. On September 28th, 1864, Col. John Chivington met here with Chiefs Black Kettle and One Eye, and other Cheyenne and Arapaho leaders, to extract information that the army would use to commit the Sand Creek Massacre. A new perfor ..read more

It’s that time of year, when the tacos are on sale and the margaritas are flowing. But don’t forget that Cinco de Mayo goes beyond the Americanized stereotypes. In a press release, Hecho en Westwood, a neighborhood group focused on community wealth building, said Cinco de Mayo is all about “resistance and pride,” but also that, “over the years this holiday has been hijacked and distorted by the commercialization and commodification of corporate America and Beer companies.” May 5 commemorates the Batalla de Puebla, where an outnumbered and poorly equipped Mexican army was victorious over French ..read more

When Anthony and Natalie Gemma decided to move from rural New Hampshire to Denver for his job with a landscaping firm, they watched online videos boosting different neighborhoods.  They considered RiNo, but it was too isolated and they quickly crossed it off their list. They looked at other parts of Five Points and Capitol Hill, but weren’t sold. LoDo appealed to them, but it was too expensive.  They narrowed their options down to the rising Cherry Creek or downtown’s Central Business District.  Finally, in February 2022, they landed on downtown — at a time when many had lost co ..read more
