Boy Kills World: Don’t Speak
Fort Worth Weekly

It’s not often that a fictional character sums up the premise of his movie better than I could, but that’s what happens in Boy Kills World. I’ll let our hero’s voiceover narrator (H. Jon Benjamin) take it: “That’s me, facing televised execution by breakfast cereal mascots. Not my happiest day, but let me take you back to an even worse one: the day the van der Koys killed my family and left me deaf and mute … the mission is simple: Make the van der Koys pay.” Sadly, that line is confined to the movie’s trailer and is not in the finished film, but it does give you an idea of this stylized reveng ..read more

Before I moved here over a decade ago, I used to come visit my sister, who got to Texas about eight years before me, and she’d always take me (and later, my now-husband) to the places she clearly thought of as “the local’s guide to Fort Worth.” We’d go to the Modern or the Botanic Garden, enjoy the novelty of grabbing a drink at a grocery store (Central Market), and, yes, even visit the then-pretty-rundown Stockyards. One time we even had old-timey photos taken. I could tell my sister was enjoying playing tour guide as we sipped $3 happy-hour margaritas downtown on the rooftop of Reata (310 Ho ..read more

Coming out May 14, Unraveled is Cut Throat Finches’ fourth album and the band’s first release in four years, which is notable given that the indie-rockers managed a record every year in their first three years of existence. It’s also notable in that Sean Russell, the principal songwriter on the previous albums, relied on his bandmates a lot more to help him finish songs. In the past, he wrote about love, self-respect, and holding fast through tough times, but Unraveled was written in 2020 and, as a result, is darker than anything that’s come before. It’s cynical even, the result of f ..read more

Now that spring is here, it’s time to hit the links. No, not Colonial or Rivercrest. #fancy We’re talking the chain-links. Disc golf around town has never been more popular. There are myriad reasons why Fort Worthians are picking up Frisbees and throwing them at “holes” made of chains, but a lot of the local players I talked to think it’s mainly because of the exercise, the fun, and the joy of seeing a plastic disc fly hundreds of feet no matter a player’s age. Whatever explanation, we’re just glad to see people enjoying nature and moving their bodies. And putting their screens down for a sec ..read more

THC Drinks Stir Up the Fort Worth Scene

The market for beverages infused with THC (the active ingredient in cannabis) is rapidly gaining popularity in many states, including Texas. Major liquor stores such as Specs Liquors are now carrying these products. This trend has piqued the curiosity of Texans who are interested in knowing whether these drinks are legal.   What does federal law say about hemp? In the year 2018, the Controlled Substances Act was modified to exclude Hemp from the list of controlled substances, thereby making it legal at the federal level. Hemp is a type of the Cannabis sativa L. plant that has a THC concen ..read more

Sasquatch Sunset: The Last of Us
Fort Worth Weekly

I don’t know if Sasquatch Sunset will wind up being the strangest movie I see in 2024, but it will definitely be a big part of the conversation. It is a movie about a family of sasquatches who have no direct contact with human beings and communicate only in grunts, whoops, and shrieks. How in the world do you make a viable movie out of these characters? There’s probably a way. In fact, there’s probably several ways. However, I’m afraid the Zellner brothers haven’t cracked it. The story takes up a year in the lives of four creatures (Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek, and Na ..read more

So, I’m sitting in a Port Lavaca hotel room on a weekday evening, thinking about winding down. It’s been a long drive from Fort Worth, and traffic has been a beating. But then I open the roller-shade on the only window in my room and see it. No, not the ocean, though I see that, too. It’s the Shellfish. Even right near where Kathryn Elizabeth Collins was possibly abducted, the people to whom the author recently spoke knew nothing about the incident from 1981. Photo by E.R. Bills And, no, not a shellfish. The Shellfish. The Port Lavaca restaurant. It looks closed down, and I don’t imm ..read more
