Ask Amy: Daughter pays for mother’s abusive behavior
Longmont Times-Call
by Amy Dickinson

Dear Amy: Have I been gaslighted? My mother was a difficult person. She was often not nice to my sister-in-law. I admired my SIL for taking the high road and for being respectful toward my mother, and I told her so many times. I bumped heads big time with my mother, too, but had a good last six years when she moved near me and dementia mellowed her out. My mother died five years ago and my sister-in-law reminds me often of how awful she was (my brother has no fond memories of childhood, and lets his wife do the talking). The last time my SIL brought this up, I stopped her and said that al ..read more

Girls tennis: Erie wins first-ever dual tournament match against Niwot
Longmont Times-Call

ERIE — Sixth-seeded Erie’s rise in the girls tennis scene has been years in the making, and it all culminated in a 5-2 victory over No. 11 Niwot during the first round of the Class 4A dual state tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The shift toward a better future began when head coach Matt Chavez first joined the staff four seasons ago. Since then, he’s helped transform the Tigers into a competitive program rather than a leisurely one. “For the past 15 to 20 years, Erie has been one of the bottom (programs) in the state,” Chavez said. “But the past like three, four years, things have changed an ..read more

With control of series in the balance, Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev crafted his redemption story
Longmont Times-Call
by Corey Masisak

WINNIPEG — The Colorado Avalanche desperately needed a save, and Alexandar Georgiev delivered the biggest one of his season to date. Colorado trailed 2-1 in Game 2 at Canada Life Centre. The Avs had just squandered a four-minute power play, missed on a Grade-A scoring chance and allowed the go-ahead goal on a fantastic one-handed tip-in by Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele. Given the way Game 1 had gone, it’s not that much of a stretch to say that Game 2 and clear control of the series hung breathlessly in the balance Tuesday night when Josh Manson and Jack Johnson had a miscommunication, an ..read more

Rockies can’t solve Padres knuckleballer Matt Waldron, lose 5-2
Longmont Times-Call
by Patrick Saunders
7h ago
Every game presents a challenge for the Rockies’ floundering offense. Wednesday night’s 5-2 loss to the Padres presented a unique puzzle the Rockies couldn’t solve. San Diego started knuckleball right-hander Matt Waldron, who had no problems making his pitch dance in the mile-high atmosphere at Coors Field. Over six innings, he gave up one run on four hits and struck out five in his first trip to LoDo. Waldron said the baseball behaved “weird.” “Definitely. I think my knuckleball wasn’t as affected, but I threw (some other pitches) that really just cut and did some weird things,” he said. “So ..read more

While Michael Malone brainstorms nickname for Jamal Murray buzzer-beater, Nuggets expect “confident” Lakers in Game 3
Longmont Times-Call
by Bennett Durando

Michael Malone’s individual film reviews this week keep encountering a distraction at the end. His eyes wander from what’s transpiring on the court and focus instead on his team’s sideline, where the Nuggets are about to erupt into a celebration they’ll someday tell their grandchildren about. His objective, of course, is to leave Jamal Murray’s Game 2 buzzer-beater in the rearview mirror for the time being. Denver still needs to win twice more to eliminate the Lakers. But Malone is only human. “I go through the film probably five times. And every time I watch it, I get just as excited,” he sai ..read more

The 15 high school students in “Los Coyotes,” an award-winning mariachi band from Uvalde, Texas, paired up with students playing the same instruments at Longmont’s Skyline High School on Wednesday. Clustered in groups on Skyline’s stage, the Texas students helped teach the Longmont students a musical piece, “Trenecito,” or “Little Train,” so they could play it together. As the students practiced, Uvalde director Albert Martinez bounced from the trumpets to the strings to the bass to the guitars and guitarron, a large bass guitar. He provided instruction, corrected missed notes and offered enco ..read more

Boulder residents call on council to increase rental excise tax
Longmont Times-Call
by Amber Carlson

As growing numbers of Boulder County residents experience housing insecurity and seek emergency help, some Boulder community members are calling on the City Council to increase a local tax on landlords that helps fund eviction prevention services. Currently, Boulder landlords must pay a $75 annual excise tax per rental property they own that requires a long-term rental license. That tax is the main source of funding for the city’s Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance Services (EPRAS) program, which provides rental assistance, legal aid and mediation to people facing a possible eviction.
