Take Back Day
Tomorrow, Saturday, is National Drug Take Back Day. You are encouraged to safely dispose of your unneeded prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a number of locations. The Police Departments in Grinnell, Pella, Oskaloosa, Altoona, and Ankeny are drop off sites. So are the Marion and Polk County Sheriff’s Departments. Fair Queen
We are over two months away from this year’s Jasper County Fair in Colfax, but applications are now open for the County Fair Queen Contest. The 2024 Fair Queen will be crowned Saturday June 15th at Newton Community Theater. Contest applications are due on or before May 14th. That’s the date of a mandatory parent meeting. Applications for the Queen Contest can be picked up at the Iowa State University Extension Office in the DMACC Building in Newton, or they can be sent directly to the Queen candidate via email. A 76 year old Newton woman accused of using some money meant for her dependent adult son has been sentenced on a reduced charge. In July…Newton Police charged Donna Lee Barnes-Hicks with Dependent Adult Abuse. She was free on her own recognizance. This week she was sentenced on a reduced charge of 4th Degree Theft. The criminal complaint filed in her case says from June 10th of 2022 through February 3rd 2023, Barnes-Hicks received in her bank account 6-thousand 495-dollars on her son’s behalf.
