Image: To remind you of the name. Last Updated: March 2024 Overview: Saya Salteña opened downtown near the World Bank in a small spot with warm pockets to fill you up.  Salteñas are Bolivia’s close relative of the empanada.  They are more “soupy” than otherwise expected, to the point you should eat from the top down.  Biting in the middle invites disaster.  You can use a spoon or slurp depending on your disposition (and maybe clothing choice that day).  And as owner Maria Iturralde says, “Think of the pastry as an edible cup.”  The savory interior (beef, chicken o ..read more

Image: Simple. Sublime. Last Updated: March 2024 Overview: The focus here is a Roman-style flatbread called pinsa.  It does not look that much different from Neapolitan-style pizza with puffed-up edges, thin crust and sizzling toppings out of the wood-burning oven, but there are subtle differences. It is oval in shape, not a circle.  The dough is composed of wheat, soy, and rice flour.  It reaches a higher hydration point than traditional pizza dough.  The result is something slightly lighter, airier without much of a tang.  It does not peter out toward the center, but ..read more

Image: Ready to go. Last Updated: February 2024 This place organically creates a bit of a buzz.  Tourists coming a couple blocks from the Mall overlap with local office workers at happy hour to fill up the two bars inside.  The Mexican place in the José Andrés Chinatown constellation, it does guacamole, tacos and margaritas well.  Several different dining areas fill out the light-drenched corner spot.  The crowds come for a reason.  Oyamel is a reliably good, fun option good for groups or smaller parties. Like the other Andrés places, the serving style is small plates ..read more

Amanda Michelle Gomez wrote about it for DCist, but now you can’t access that because WA ..read more

Image: Turkey hiding in mole. Last Updated: February 2024 Overview: The small spot on P Street has been home to many a favorite for locals.  With the closing of Pesce (which reopened a few blocks away!) there was a risk that would not continue.  Fear not, Amparo Fondita has cooking that could fill a larger space and pull diners from farther away, but it has been channeled into a cozy storefront fit for the neighborhood. The food is from Chef Christian Irabién, who was behind the very good Muchas Gracias in Chevy Chase, who said one of the goals is to do recognizable Mexican. “I feel ..read more

Image: Half Smoke Last Updated: January 2024 Overview: Ben’s Chili Bowl serves a classic D.C. half-smoke with chili.  Other hot dogs are also available, including turkey dogs.  They come with chips, but you can add fries (with chili or not).  There are those that say the place deserves more recognition for its place in history than its food offerings, and that may be a fair knock.  We still enjoy the classic half-smoke regardless of its culinary pedigree, or maybe despite it. In addition to the dogs and fries, they have burgers (including turkey and veggie patties).  T ..read more

Image: Lana Turner reminding you to support what you want to see survive. Dearest Gentle Reader, we ride a rollercoaster of weather, shocking our systems, challenging our wardrobe, and creating rare al fresco dining chances in January. Like D.C. public services, we plow ahead thinly-staffed and slowly to bring you another week in review of dining news from the District and elsewhere. We also added a spot to our D.C. dining guide this week. So shall we proceed? Updates to D.C. Recommended Restaurant List Added: Villa Yara – The cute spot in Georgetown with some pretty good food. Image: Veggies Last Updated: January 2024 Overview: The setting at Villa Yara is so well done with warmth and color that it seems ready made for diners to take pictures to post.  Flowery ornaments overhead and a bar as you enter, give way to a long dining room with faded pink pastel accents, that leads to a romantic patio with a fountain in the back.  It is almost so well constructed and IG-friendly that it may make you suspect the food is secondary.  Fear not, the food is also well-conceived and executed. The plates are made for sharing, with many meze options from Lebanon.&nb ..read more

Image: Pizza Last Updated: January 2024 Overview: Comet puts out a solid version of individually-sized pizzas, but it is the ambiance as much as the grub that keeps the Chevy Chasers coming back. Neapolitan in size, the crust is on the doughy side with big puffy edges.  The ingredients are well-sourced and can change with the seasons.  In addition to the traditional options, they offer playful takes like Ca-lamb-ity J’s with housemade lamb sausage, tzatziki, za’atar spice, whipped feta, or Gourd of the Rings with pesto and autumn squash. Like many a favorite pizza joint, the wings a ..read more
