Updates on Places in Mecklenburg
Julie's Mecklenburg, Virginia Discoveries

Whenever I hear about a person in Mecklenburg, I immediately want to know where they lived, and see it on a map. Then I can remember the person better, because I associate them with a place. When someone talks to me about a Jones family, it helps me to know whether the Jones family lived at Lombardy Grove, Boydton, Chase City, or the Great Creek area of Bracey. I’ve been organizing all my research and pictures by locality the last few years. I’ve been modifying the website to be the same. It’s been almost a year since I sent a post. I had some health problems to work through. Then I was in a s ..read more

DNA studies
Julie's Mecklenburg, Virginia Discoveries

DNA can be rather confusing, fun, and interesting, all at the same time. Sometimes DNA reveals things we’d rather not know, but can also break through brick walls in our research. I’m adding a section about DNA to my website, so I can share known DNA studies. I’ll share links to helpful tutorials and videos that explain DNA and how to use it as a research tool. I’ve also created a table to list information about the studies. Please contact me if you know about any DNA studies that are relevant to Mecklenburg research. Please include the following: Surname of study Type of study Contact person ..read more

Here is an update on how I am listing cemetery and church information on my website. I’m listing all the Mecklenburg county cemeteries that I know of on this new cemetery page. I will notate whether the cemetery is in Munsey Moore’s cemetery books and if so, on which page number. I’ll also give links to any external sites or books that show relevant cemetery information (findagrave, billiongraves, Mecklenburg County Cemeteries, DAR cemetery books, etc…) My goal is to help organize and display information about Mecklenburg cemeteries from all the available sources I can find, along side family ..read more

Mecklenburg County’s Post Offices & Rural Place Names
Julie's Mecklenburg, Virginia Discoveries

I normally send things as a post, but I couldn’t get this to format correctly for email, so I made a page instead. There are a number of columns, charts and maps. I began with a curiosity about the old place names. I wondered how many place names used to have a post office there? I moved to Stafford County, Virginia in 1993. There were only 2 post offices open for the whole county then, while Mecklenburg had 11. I found the names of 118 old post offices, past and present, with 73 post offices open at the same time (1906) in Mecklenburg County! A History of Mecklenburg County, Virginia’s Many P ..read more

Mecklenburg County had townships?

1950 Census Enumeration map La Crosse on Google Maps (accessed 8 Jun 2022) current VDOT map My friend looked at the VDOT map of Mecklenburg and wondered what the difference was between the shaded town areas and the rectangles. We investigated and learned that the dotted rectangle areas are magisterial districts. Then my friend discovered townships listed on the Library of Virginia website! I went back to my last post, and deleted the sentence “Virginia does not have townships.” I believe Virginia first had townships as part of the reconstruction period. But it is also possible for a pl ..read more

29 defined areas of Mecklenburg County, Virginia

I’ve spent a lot of time pondering ways to share and sort information by locality. I’ve had so many questions about places. For example, there is a church on highway 47, almost seven miles east of Chase City, that has a Chase City address. But there’s a VDOT sign near the church that says Drapersville. Which place name would help people find that church? Which place name would locals associate with the church? What place name would people associate with that church who have never been to Mecklenburg, and have only looked at maps? I want to know things like, why does Google maps list rural pla ..read more

Places in Mecklenburg: Past and Present
Julie's Mecklenburg, Virginia Discoveries

Early Mecklenburg places were built up near rivers and large creeks. Later, places were built up around mineral springs and railroads. The population movement to larger cities during the depression and then again in World War II to find work, the addition of interstate highways, and the subsequent removal of rail lines had a huge impact on the rural areas. Note – For the purposes of this article – a ‘place’ is an area, locality, or population center that is referred to in historical records pertaining to Mecklenburg. In Mecklenburg there were places like Lombardy Grove and St. Tammany which at ..read more

The 22nd and 98th Virginia Regiments

Gray area shows 98th Regiment. The non shaded area was the 22nd Regiment While researching my ancestors in Mecklenburg County, many of the records I have found pertaining to my family show that they were located in the the 98th Regiment. I have not been able to find a map that showed what the boundaries of the 98th Regiment were, so I decided to research it and map it out myself. I created a layer on my map, and shaded the boundaries of the 98th Regiment (according to the results of my research) in gray. Lewis Parham was made the sheriff of Mecklenburg county in August 1819. He appointed my an ..read more

Estates of John & James Jones 1817-1835
Julie's Mecklenburg, Virginia Discoveries

William Jones wrote a confusing will in January 1818. I’ve read the will many times and found it difficult to understand because he didn’t clarify several relationships regarding people he named in his will. William said “my son John”, and that when John died, “my four grandchildren” received John’s portion of the estate. The grandchildren were listed as Mary, Thomas, Mourning and John. This would seem to indicate that those four children were the children of John who is the son of William Jones. Also in the will, “Mary” was loaned 100 acres for life, but this same 100 acres was also to be di ..read more
