We are all going through some tough times right now, Corona-virus has put us in lock-down with just one trip out for exercise per day and many of us have races cancelled. Many of us, myself included had been training for spring marathons and had built our mileage up well. It’s quite right that you may have lost your way with training with no event to focus on but we must keep running for our mental health, but how do we do that with no real focus?   Virtual Events One way is to train for a virtual event, you don’t have to sign up for anything unless you want some bling. One idea is to look for ..read more

Marathon Race Review – 01/03/2020 I was supposed to run this race in 2019 but ended up getting called in for an operation on my shoulder just a few days before the race so had to defer to 2020. It was meant to be my first marathon back then and a training run for my first ultra marathon. The Cambridge Boundary Run is a marathon organised annually by the Cambridge Hare and Hounds University Running Club. It’s a 26.2 mile loop around Cambridge on a mixed terrain of tarmac, gravel paths, grass meadows and fields. The Plan Last year I had learnt a lot about nutrition and hydration and I had heard ..read more

With mental health at the forefront of social media as we have lost yet another person far too young to suicide I thought I would write a few words, offer some stats and offer some advice. In the UK it is reported that around 1 in 4 of us at any time have an issue with anxiety and/or depression. In 2018 6,507 people in the UK took their own lives, three quarters of those were men. With our lives becoming ever more sedentary as we hurtle through the 4th industrial revolution and technology further taking over manual labour we are moving less. Pubs and social venues are disappearing, shop ..read more

Tonight was a tough tempo session on Zwift, I’m around halfway through a half marathon training program. For those that don’t know what Zwift is take a read of my blog called Escape To Watopia . On Tuesday Zwift noticed an increase in my pace and as that means Zwift adjusts my training accordingly I knew it would be a tough one. London Bound I decided to go for the central London route, I quite enjoy that one and have actually run and cycled some of that route for real. It started of with a steady half mile warm up before going through two 1.5 mile segments and a 2 mile segment that took ..read more

Suicide To Success – A Book Review
Running From The Black Dog

I was contacted last week by a publisher asking if I would be willing to review a book for my blog. Reading the detail about the book I agreed. It certainly seemed an interesting read and has been given great reviews by Roger Black MBE and Steve Backley OBE. The book is the personal story of entrepreneur Rob Goddard. It documents his roller coaster of a ride through life with it’s many ups and downs. Life takes him from doing well to having nothing. Becoming a top 1% earner in the UK, losing it all again. Then moving to Dubai and getting close to taking his own life and finally through to ..read more

Finally, after a couple of months the black clouds have finally lifted, I have made some gains on the black dog! Winter and in particularly Christmas is a hard time for me mentally , I think it’s a mixture of a number of the following things; Dark evenings and less sunlight More social interaction which drains me as an introvert Family issues, although it’s not fair that I elaborate on this here   Over excited and often times naughty kids Less exercise Eating lots of rubbish processed foods Added to this list this year was the passing of my wife’s Nan, my mother in law being admitted to hos ..read more
