In 1889 the novel “Three Men in a Boat” by Jerome K. Jerome was published. This humorous novel has stayed in the public consciousness ever since. It would be another 115 years until a far more momentous three men in a boat moment occurred. In 2004, Peter Ellis, Mike France and
Christopher Ward decided to form the “Christopher Ward” watch brand leading to their first
watch in 2005. It is also 10 years since the first Christopher Ward watch featuring their in-house
SH21. The brand has decided to celebrate its twentieth anniversary in 2024 and their first
birthday present to us and themselves is ..read more

While many brands tend to have peak and trough years at Watches & Wonders (and formerly Baselworld and SIHH), Cartier seems to have found the formula to stay consistently at the top of their game year after year. The brand’s releases may not always be the watch on everyone’s lips, but they are rarely far behind. Perhaps part of that is due to the brand’s access to a myriad of watch case designs that each have their own heritage. In fact, most brands would kill to have the heritage of just one of Cartier’s iconic shapes. This year, Cartier continues that trend with its latest revival in its ..read more

As watch enthusiasts, we have preferences in terms of design and materials. Even when we think we have kept an open mind, we tend to gravitate to what is in vogue, after all, we are consumers and not watchmakers. One of the few characteristics I enjoy about watches is that they are often artistic impressions of an object with the same core function; tell the time. With this in mind, different materials and layouts are partially the reason why I enjoy watches, feeling surprised by a new design is the best feeling, at least for me.
Stone dials are one of those categories that I never understoo ..read more

IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar
You never own an IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar. You’re just passing it along till about 2,000,000 generations later, someone takes it in for the moon phase to be adjusted. It’s insane that the caliber 52640’s moon phase will stay accurate for 45 million years! That overshadows the also impressive accuracy of the secular perpetual calendar, which only needs adjusting in the year 3999! The moon phase accuracy is due to a reduction gear train using three intermediate wheels, the result of 22 trillion computer simulations that resulted in that successful combina ..read more

JLC Duometre Chronograph Moon
Jaeger LeCoultre released an updated version of their highly complicated, out-of-the-box chronograph. The “watchmaker’s watchmaker” does produce your more standardized chronograph caliber, but for the true ultra “chrono-connoisseur” (is that even a thing?) there is the Duometre Chronograph Moon. Initially launched in 2007 and inspired by movements created over one-and-a-quarter century ago, the Duometre stands as an ambassador as to why JLC is without a doubt on the horological Mount Rushmore.
The Duometre earns its name by housing two mainspring barrels. In watch ..read more

Patek Philippe World Time 5330G
Patek Philippe’s newly unveiled ref 5330G world time date is an evolution of the quintessential complication for the king of high-end horology. Patek’s world time complication has always come without a date, but that was until last year at the Patek Philippe Tokyo Watch Art Exhibition, where we saw a 300-piece limited eccentric purple dial world time feature a pointer date for the first time. The 5330G uses the iconic 240 caliber as its base, and on top of a date and world time complication, also features a local day/night indicator. To avoid obstructing the vie ..read more
