The Trouble With Using the iPad Pro for Editing Photos
Chris J Wilson

I’ve been a big iPad advocate for a long time. My iPad was the device that got me into the Apple world after using a HP tablet. At first I was really keen on just reading tablets and the iPad but I soon found it useful for more and more of my work. I even enjoyed using the iPad for editing photos with apps like snapseed which made me feel more connected to my images as I poked and prodded them with my finger. However, there were limitations that meant editing on a Mac was essential. These included things like not being able to edit RAW files as well as limited apps functionality to edit images ..read more

What camera is best?
Chris J Wilson
by Chris Wilson

Because I’ve been trying some different styles of photography, and found myself using my Fuji x100t less, I’ve wondered about changing and upgrading my camera. After all, a decision made five years ago when I knew less about cameras isn’t likely to be the best decision for me now. I learnt that soon after I bought my first camera! The only issue is, what camera should I get or want? Cameras are an area where there really isn’t one good answer. Depending on your needs, style, and preferences, one camera may be much better than another. In some cases there are clear losers or over priced options ..read more

Why I Don’t Post Family Photos Online
Chris J Wilson
by Chris Wilson

95% or greater of the photos I take today, are family photos. Pictures of my wife, daughter and in-laws about our everyday activities. While I was certainly mostly taking family photos before the lockdown, since the pandemic started — and even now with the restrictions mostly lifted here in Poland — it has remained true. And yet, I don’t post these family photos online — with very rare exceptions which I’ll outline later. Here’s why. Once something is online, you don’t have control anymore As part of Facebook’s terms and conditions, you give the global social network the right to use your phot ..read more

A photo tribute to Europe
Chris J Wilson

Yesterday it officially happened. Britain left the European Union. And while Europe is certainly more than just the EU, the rhetoric surrounding this move reveals the isolationist dreams behind it. As a Brit living in Europe and someone who has traveled to a good number of places in Europe, I thought I’d make a photo tribute to Europe to Mark this occasion. Each photo is from a different European city. Some are before I knew a thing about photography (and you can tell!) See if you can name all the cities and guess which cameras were involved. Btw, I voted to remain. Cities Hamb ..read more

A trip to Zakopane

England isn’t known for its snow, and the south even less so. Growing up I can remember perhaps two occasions it snowed more than just an sprinkling of icing sugar’s worth. That’s why I still find snow somewhat magical. When my parents came to visit a couple of weekends back, we decided to take a break from the usual tourist spots of Kraków and do something different. After all, there’s only so many times you can trot round the Jewish quarter before you know every corner. (Pro:tip, go to “Cheder” they serve amazing Israeli coffee and baklava) Instead, we departed for an overnight trip ..read more

Ricoh GR (Original)

I was surprised to discover that I haven’t written much about the Ricoh GR which I got almost two and half years ago. I was motivated to buy one due to both the praise some of my friends gave the camera, and my need for a more pocketable camera. I had just moved home and changed my commute, I now went through a shopping centre with a less than friendly attitude towards cameras and I wanted something that drew even less attention than my Fujifilm x100t. Enter the Ricoh GR Now, there have been two revision (the mark 2 with wifi added and the new mark 3 with a new sensor, lens, improve ..read more

What will Photo blogging look like in 2020?
Chris J Wilson

I’ve been blogging in one form or another for over 10 years now. The last five of those have been more focused on photography and photo blogging. As the decade ends and a new one begins, I wonder what the future holds for photo blogging in 2020 and beyond? Who needs a blog when there’s social media? For many photographers, a blog seems pointless in a world dominated by social media. With Instagram, Snapchat and even YouTube so visually focused and centralized, why would some come to a blog? And why should a someone bother writing a blog post when an Instagram post required less text ..read more

On The Farm

Last year, My in-laws bought some farm land. It didn’t have that much on it: An old, worn-down house, a couple of barns and a stretch of land for growing crops. but over the last year they’ve started to make it their own. As a city-born westerner, going to the farm can be a strange experience. There’s lots to do but there’s no hustle and bustle. It’s the type of labour that leave you tired physically, but with a sense of peace and purpose. I always feel better after visiting. There’s not much going on, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to photograph. But that’s never diffi ..read more

11 Ways to Restore Your Street Photography Motivation
Chris J Wilson

This holiday break I was with my brother who also likes taking photos. I asked him about the photos he was taking and he and I both confessed that we weren’t really taking that many photos at the moment for one reason or another. As we chatted my frustration at this fact grew and I decided it was time to come up with a plan to help myself get out of this photographic funk and get back into shooting again. Some of these ideas will be useful for you too if you lack street photography motivation at the moment. Step 0: Identify the root cause Chances are there is one or maybe two ideas in here tha ..read more

Why I’m Shooting More Mobile Phone Photography
Chris J Wilson
by Chris Wilson

I had been very critical of Smartphone street photography. Although your smartphone is the camera you always have with you for most people, I also always had a Fuji X100T with me and it was better for street photography. Well, so I thought. In the last couple of months I have almost exclusive shot mobile street photography with my iPhone SE and practically stopped taking street photos with a stand alone camera (the exception is some film photos, more in a different post, I promise). This has lead to me being more and more convinced that mobile phone photography will be my path forward. To be f ..read more
