Okay for AK...47

We played AK47 Republic (classic edition) back in January after a break of a few years. As we were likely to have an even number show for this week's gaming evening Phil had suggested more of the same so the newbies could fix the rules in their heads. Well Tim at least. Steve didn't play last time. With Chris away sunning himself somewhere I was supplying three armies. I went for the Zambolan People's Front (Dictatorship), the Swamibian Defence Force (Colonials) and the Army of Dog (Religious Movement). I set up a type one and type five terrain. I should probably have looked back at the last r ..read more

A WD friend, Tim G, popped by for a visit today, so I entertained him with a  look at my early attempts at rules for the Hapsburgs v the Ottomans in the time of Prince Eugene. They have featured on the blog briefly back in February, but I thought it was time to return to them, now I have painted more figures. This is most of what I've got. There's some Ottoman artillery still in the box, but that's it, I think. Tim took the Hapsburgs on the right and I commanded the Ottomans. Tim got an early breakthrough when his Fearless Hussars chased off my Wavering Akinci. Undeterred I ord ..read more

Edgcote Refresh Update

I've spent a few days reviewing the Edgcote figures and tidying them up. I've also been trying to work out how to do the scenery without filling up the boot of the car. I think I'm going to use one of my wargame neoprene mats with foam rubber hills underneath. This is how it is looking so far. Nothing clever. The stream is from my standard terrain box, as are the hedges. The trees are just pushed into the hedges for now. I will probably base them individually on 2p pieces. Phil was using polystyrene tiles and just used to push them into the board. This is Pembroke's army arrayed on Edgcot ..read more

Chris' Imagi-Nation inter war campaign carries on a-pace. He has rolled the table along from the last game, and the river line I was defending with Steve is now half way up the table instead of on the edge. Chris has soloed some of the intervening action, and the Paprikan cavalry is trying to envelope the Tibian right flank, whilst their engineering units are trying to force their way across the river at the broken bridge site.  Tim couldn't make it this week, so Steve swapped sides and joined the Paprikan hordes alongside Phil. I needed to hold the river line as much as possible whilst ..read more

The Battle before the Gates of Nineveh
Wargaming for Grown-ups

In 612BC the capital of the Assyrian Empire, Nineveh, was sacked by a coalition of its enemies. Whilst this fact is known there is very little on which to base any form of historical recreation of the event. Any how, sieges are tough to do in an afternoon and besides, there was almost certainly a battle before the gates of the city in an attempt to prevent its encirclement. Perhaps. Even less is known about this battle which may not have happened. Consequently it was an ideal pick for an Easter Bank Holiday massive ancient refight. Of sorts. These refights have been a feature of bank holidays ..read more

Paprika and Tibia - the next phase

Chris wanted to revisit his 1930s Imagi-nation campaign this week. He'd taken Gazala to a WD mini-conference and I think he wanted to consolidate some learning.  The Paprikans continue their unwarranted aggression towards the peace loving Tibians. Chris split up me and Phil for this one, with Phil defecting to the invaders, partnering Tim. Steve joined me as defenders. We're at the end nearest the camera. They have to storm down the highway as quicky as possible and capture the town and the bridges across the river. We had to stop them. My oh my they had a lot of kit. I gave Steve an ..read more

Worst DBA Army Prep

Chris K & Phil are off to Steel Warriors in Sheffield this weekend to play in a DBA tournament. This tournament has a twist that there's a prize for the worst performing army*. I understand people bring and army then everyone swaps round. As Chris is just back from running a major NQM game last weekend I set up for some DBA games in Shedquarters so Chris & Phil could try out their loser armies. I hadn't really got the message about worst armies, so I picked out Early Byzantines (i.e. Justinian & Belisarius) and some Alans to face them. Tim came along as well, so we had four of ..read more

A Gazala Again

This week we were back in the Western Desert as Chis K continues to work on his hex based version of NQM. We were doing Gazala, a battle we last fought in Shedquarters back oh...10 years or more ago. Alas for some reason the reports of the game have lost their pictures and I have no back ups. Which is a shame, as it was a massive game. So, this year’s model was more restrained, fitting on Chris’ conservatory table, probably no bigger than 6’ x 4’. Phil & I had the British, and Tim and Steve the Germans. At first glance it looked like we were heavily outnumbered. I had the leading armo ..read more

Philling in at the Northern cup

As I mentioned in the last post I agreed to make up the numbers at the DBA Northern Cup at Hammerhead as Phil wasn’t able to attend*. Chris K drove  - which made a nice change for me – so it was an early start on a Saturday to be at Chez Chris for 7:45. Then we were off up the A1 to Newark. As previously trailed this was a 6mm based as 20/5/8mm elements tournament with  preset armies and terrain. As the frontage was 60mm and thus a change to normal base widths we were all given a shiny red Perspex measuring tool. The terrain tables all awaiting the competitors.  The pu ..read more

Chris K asked me if I wanted to play in the DBA tournament at Hammerhead in a week's time. This is not normally my thing at all, but Phil had had to drop out, which left Chris sitting on an unpaid fee and the organisers a man short. As they're supplying all the armies and terrain  it seemed like an easy day out. Then it turns out the armies are all 6mm on 60mm frontage bases (!) and are all classical period. We normally play on 40mm frontages with medieval type armies. No worries, I have a load of 20mm classical period figures on 60mm bases, so I can make up quite a few of the armies for ..read more
