Mini Reflections of Year 2022: Better late than never

Christmas is coming in just a couple of days. Nearing the end of another year, and it feels like just yesterday I just welcomed year 2022.  And boy, what a year 2022 has been.  When I look back, I don't really know how to feel about this year except reeling in with gratitude from the lessons I've been taught, all the mistakes that I've made and wasted much precious time I've spent worrying and feeling anxious on some things, which I'll never get back. These lessons I've been taught in year 2022 will also go on to be the most precious lessons I've ever come to learn - both about other ..read more

Saturday in Downtown Orchard: Feasting and giving blood to save lives

Saturday is finally here! Having heard good reviews about LINO Pizza & Pasta Bar, I decided to book seats at this restaurant with my friends for lunch. Well, we enjoyed ourselves - fuller review to be up on the blog soon! And... since we were at Shaw Centre, how can we not drop by Tarte by Cheryl Koh for a sweet treat and a possibly perfect way to end post-Italian fare?  Overall, it was a lovely afternoon. The three of us had a lovely catch up about life and career, peppered with some necessary offloading of our work stresses that seem to plague most Singaporeans. Still, the pastries ..read more

The Warmth of December: Japanese lunch, candles with flowers and wine

Ahhhh. December.  I was diligently clocking in my hours while the rest of Singapore goes travelling, Netflix show-hunting or partying with friends as seen on Instagram. And my laptop pulls a stunt to subtly (or not) warn me that I should start to slow down - if not, it will, on my behalf.   The only month you can tell your colleagues who requested things from you that you'll give them what they need by EOD - literally by "end of December", I guess. Just another one of my laptop's antic to get me to stop working it into overdrive, I guess.  Working from home has been bo ..read more

Korea's Famous Um Yong Baek's Pork Soup Rice (엄용백 돼지국밥): Is it worth the visit?

With origins from Busan, South Korea, Um Yong Baek (엄용백) is no stranger to foodies of that land. Famous for their traditional Dwaeji-gukbap (돼지국밥), which is also literally pork-rice soup.  Since May 2022 when it opened its first store in Singapore along the Telok Ayer stretch, the queues have not waned. I'm not one to rush to a new eatery when it opens, I bid my time and if the queue doesn't wane after months, I know I'll usually be in for a treat. Usually. Well, just like their South Korean eateries, their pork rice soup and boiled pork (suyuk 돼지수육) is also recommended. But so is the ..read more

Noodle Star K: Popular but...?

I finally visited Noodle Star K. Yes, the one always filled with queues along Tanjong Pagar road, the street filled with many Korean eateries.  You all know how I love my traditional Korean food, which I always enjoy during pre-pandemic days as I head to Korea yearly to satisfy my food cravings. I do have certain standards for how I like to enjoy my Korean food, and as I remember how I tasted the spicy, yet delicious jjamppong from a traditional hanok (한옥) restaurant located near South Korea's Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae 청와대).  Having heard many people loved the noodles here (well, th ..read more

My easy lunch: Granarolo Burrata

I woke up one day craving for burrata cheese, and thankfully I previously got a couple of burrata cheese from Redmart when shopping for my groceries, but I'm sure but I'm sure you can find this in the other major Singapore supermarkets as well.  Usually the fresh ones are more expensive (and boasts a shorter shelf life) than their frozen counterparts. If I get fresh ones, I usually eat them within a day, or two - max.  I'm trying this one today, Granarolo Burrata ($8.80 from Redmart), and so far it looks fresh and moist. However, I didn't even bother reading the ingre ..read more

Gather Cafe: Lovely Brunch at Raffles Hotel Arcade Singapore

It was a sunny day in Singapore, so we decided to head over to the popular Gather cafe located within Raffles Hotel Arcade Singapore. We started off the meal ordering coffee before proceeding to order their popular galettes. Their coffees are sourced by Genovese Coffee, a three-generation family-owned coffee company in Melbourne, Australia.  Galettes, a French term, are thin crepes that can be topped with either sweet or savoury toppings. And in Gather Cafe, their galettes contain wheat, hence the colour looks slightly different. We ordered their Mushroom ($20) and Ratatouille ($20 ..read more
