Opening Day in Minnesota doesn’t mean baseball. Or the State Fair. Nope. Opening Day in Minnesota is the first day of a love story: Minnesotans and walleyes. I wrote something similar a few years ago, but nothing has changed. Nor have our major Minnesota holidays: Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Opening Day of fishing. The sun was shining along the Knife River in the Lake Superior area on Monday, April 15. The Minnesota DNR’s Lake Superior fisheries staff drove along the river and parked by a trap that the agency built in 1996. Since its creation, the trap has been used to catch steelhead (rainbow trout) for further studies on the population and spawning process of this fish species. DNR staff visit the trap every day during the late winter and early spring to catch these trout and document various characteristics. As is the case for many Americans, Joe Arterburn’s money doesn’t go as far as it used to. On the one hand, it’s being whittled away by inflation. On the other hand, Arterburn is spending a disproportionate share of it on his Nebraska state property taxes, which are going up as property values rise. His governor has proposed some relief. Gov. Jim Pillen’s “Operation Clean Out the Closets” initiative, which he announced in his state-of-the-state address in January 2024, proposes to sweep cash “hoarded” by state agencies into Nebraska’s general fund, where it could be used as a one-time windfall ..read more

The 2023 Minnesota legislative session was busy with historic budgets and appropriations. As millions and billions of dollars was spread among bills, projects, and agencies, another bill passed that should draw the attention of anyone who appreciates Minnesota’s environment. House File 1900, authored by Rep. Athena Hollins, DFL-St. Paul, advanced the process of renewing the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. Minnesota’s walleye egg take on time, on target in 2024

Matt Ward knows the DNR’s Hinckley area fisheries office isn’t exactly running with the big dogs when it comes to walleye egg collection in April. “We’re not like the Cut Foot Sioux, collecting 200 quarts of eggs in a day,” he said of the operation near Lake Winnibigoshish. But when it comes to stocking Minnesotans’ favorite fish, each location that collects eggs from female walleyes and milt from the males plays a role – especially in an era when “strain” often determines where tiny fish eventually will call home. USFWS says lake sturgeon not endangered, allowing state management to continue
Outdoornews » Ice Fishing
by Todd Richmond

Lake sturgeon don’t need Endangered Species Act protections, federal wildlife officials announced Monday, saying that stocking programs have helped the prehistoric fish return to areas where they had vanished. The decision ends the Arizona-based Center of Biological Diversity’s petition filed in May 2018 asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list lake sturgeon as endangered or threatened. Such listings would make harvesting the fish illegal, but without them, popular sturgeon-harvest seasons in states such as Wisconsin and Michigan can continue.
