Most people hate going to the dentist; it’s not something that you look forward to in the calendar, and I’ve never heard anyone say ‘I can’t wait to get a root canal’ ever in my life. Still, one patient recently discovered something extraordinary when they went to their local practice, happening upon an old N64 Kiosk from McDonalds. That would have been fantastic enough for a retro gamer feeling a little nervous about having some metal tools poking around in their mouth, but it gets more puzzling. The cabinet has since been fully converted into a bona fide Xbox 360 arcade station with control ..read more

The last few days have been amazing for iPhone users; now that Delta has officially been added to the App Store, Retro Gamers with iPhones (and there are over a billion iPhone users in the world) can finally play their favourite games from older consoles without having to carry another device around with them. Then we heard the news that PPSSPP was coming to the App Store from the developer himself, and now Provenance is set to follow in their footsteps, bringing with it the ability to play SEGA and PlayStation games. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this is the best time to be a ret ..read more

We kicked off our book series back in 2022, after working on it for almost two straight years. It was a huge project, one that took blood, sweat and tears by myself and the incredible individuals at Lost In Cult. We didn’t know what A Handheld History was going to become and it took the retro gaming community by storm, it was so successful that we partnered with Harper Collins to get this in book stores around the world, and it was even a #1 Best Seller on Amazon in the Video Games Art Books category for some time. The success of our first book, alongside the help from Retro Modding‘s sponsor ..read more

How To Get Skins On Delta Emulator (The Easy Way)
Retro Dodo
by Seb Santabarbara

With the arrival of the Delta emulator on iPhone, gamers are flocking to play some of their favorite retro games while walking the dog, catching the bus, or in the middle of meetings when they should be taking notes. Some emulators are known for coming with skins that resemble the consoles they recreate; RetroArch is a great example of this, and as you may have all recently found out, so is Delta. But what if you don’t want your SNES games to show a SNES theme? What if you want your Pokemon titles to have a Pikachu theme, or maybe mix it up and add Mario into the mix while playing Zelda like ..read more

Meet The World’s Smallest Working Nintendo Wii Console, ‘The Short Stack’

We’ve spent a lot of years wondering about when we might see more mini consoles dropping from Nintendo. The N64 Mini was something that I searched the internet for pretty much every day after the arrival of the SNES Classic Console, but with Ninty pushing their Online Service, it looks less and less likely that we’ll be seeing any more of their old machines heading to our TV cabinets in miniature form. Not to worry; that’s why we have the retro gaming community. Rather than waiting around for something to come to them, they kick things up a notch and create the tech that we sit here dreaming ..read more

If there’s one email that I love seeing arriving in my inbox, it’s a press release about a new collection bringing old games back into the limelight. I mean, that’s the kind of thing we live for here at Retro Dodo Towers, so I guess that’s no real surprise. In homage to the Atari Lynx, ‘The Epyx Collection Handheld’ from Pixel Games UK and Imagine Software sees six amazing games for the iconic handheld heading back into gamer’s palms on April 25th. These games have never appeared on the Switch before, making this somewhat of an exciting exclusive for older gamers and a completely new experien ..read more

Emulation Wars: iPhone VS Handhelds – Which Will Prevail?
Retro Dodo
by Brandon Saltalamacchia

It’s been a long time since the emulation industry has had this much activity. Nintendo sued Yuzu a few weeks ago, one of the most popular Nintendo Switch emulators around and now Apple has allowed their app store to host emulator applications, opening up emulation to millions of new gamers across the globe. When one door closes, another one opens. Apple’s launch has been little bit flakey i’ll admit, emulators would pop up for a few days available to download and then be removed in a few hours, likely because most of these “new applications” happen to be stealing the ideas and copyrighted ma ..read more

If there’s one thing that we love just as much as playing video games, it’s reading about them. I mean, we can’t be looking at screens all the time, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t keep our minds engaged on games in other formats. Even video game journalists need to keep on top of their retro knowledge, even if only to amaze/bore people at parties. Many of you will have already seen our book series A Handheld History, a dream collection of handheld gaming devices across the ages, jam-packed with information and amazing photographs designed to ensnare your retro senses. We wrote the book i ..read more

Atari have announced Yars Rising, a spiritual sequel to 1982’s Yars’ Revenge, for release on PC and consoles in late 2024. Yars Rising is a clear departure from its best-selling Atari 2600 predecessor, with the classic sci-fi shooter gameplay stepping aside for a modern metroidvania adventure, as teased in the announcement trailer below. The announcement trailer sets the scene with the neon and rain soaked cityscape channeling serious Blade Runner energy. image credit: atari WayForward Technologies, the studio behind 2019’s River City Girls and the upcoming Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution ..read more
