Drifting: A Warning for the Christian Life
For The Disciple

Two weeks ago, I went on a kayaking and camping trip with several of my friends. We had such a blast! There was lots of laughter, joy, deep conversations, and fellowship that happened over that trip. Our activities certainly helped with that, especially the kayaking part. Kayaking required communication and teamwork and lots of upper body strength in order to keep going on the lake. We were at it for a few hours at least, just enjoying the scenery and the breeze. You could feel the sun in just the right spots: not enough to get sunburnt, but just enough to feel comforted by its rays. Not to me ..read more

Sonship: The Supreme Role of Jesus
For The Disciple
by Karsten Harrison

When we hear the word “supreme”, we tend to think of something or someone who is far above something or someone else. Thoughts of great rulers flood our minds, one of those examples perhaps being of royalty. Throughout history, there have been several monarchs that have ruled many different nations. Persia, England, Spain, and France are few examples that fit under this category. Kings and queens ruled these nations; they were superior as compared to the rest of the citizens. But why? Why were these kings and queens permitted to have this elevated status? These monarchs came into power through ..read more

The Sermon on the Mount: Setting the Scene
For The Disciple
by Karsten Harrison

Discipleship is perhaps the backbone of the entire Christian movement. Jesus understood this. His objective was to call out a few and make them disciples of Himself, and inherently, God’s kingdom. Multiplication was the strategy Christ used in this ministry, so multiplication is the strategy of the church today, and this multiplication is carried out through discipleship. This entire process is important and crucial to the life of Christianity, so it is equally important to understand Jesus’s teachings of discipleship. In Matthew’s Gospel, he records the most robust discourse from Jesus over t ..read more

Rainy Revelation
For The Disciple
by Karsten Harrison

Over the past few days, the weather has been gloomy and musty. The bright, golden beams of sunlight have become a mere memory. Clouds imprison the sunbeams from my eyes and are only producing rain. Rain and clouds have been the forecast for the past few days, and it definitely does not seem to yield the taste that summer normally holds. As someone who enjoys sunlight, I cannot help to be dragged into the gloominess from the sun-covering clouds. Just recently, though, I was able to have a conversation with someone who said something that struck me: “The rain is one of the clearest pieces of evi ..read more

“Thus says the Lord: We have heard a cry of panic,     of terror, and no peace. Ask now, and see,     can a man bear a child? Why then do I see every man     with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor?     Why has every face turned pale? Alas! That day is so great     there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob;     yet he shall be saved out of it.” Jeremiah 30:5-7 There was great suffering within Israel and Judah during King Zedekiah’s reign. Our Defense
For The Disciple
by Karsten Harrison

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2 Psalm 18 is written by David and expresses his deep gratitude for the many works God had done in his own life. This Psalm is actually identical to 2 Samuel 22 where similar themes are being portrayed. One of those themes, in both texts, is described using the words “rock”, “fortress”, “refuge”, “shield”, and “stronghold”. Each of those words convey that God is our defense. God is your defense. The Greek phalanx was a defense that wa ..read more

What is Love?
For The Disciple
by Karsten Harrison
4y ago
Love is romanticized in our current culture. Going beyond this, it is really mysticized too. This just means that we have adapted to this cinematic idea of love that can be highly toxic and even dangerous. Now, love itself is not intrinsically bad. Just because culture has warped its significance and true meaning does not mean that it is invaluable. However, it is important to seek the full story of love: in order to find out what it is and what it accomplishes. That being said, Scripture, God’s Word, the Bible, will possess this precious truth. In this the love of God was made manifest among ..read more

Easter is Over… Now What?
For The Disciple
by Karsten Harrison
4y ago
If there is one day in the year that is most valuable and to be most treasured, it is Easter. It’s a day full of celebration by participating in egg hunts, stuffing our faces with delicious chocolate candies, and enjoying family. More than this, Easter is the day that Christ broke through the chains of death, shattering the shackles that once held all of mankind. It is on this day that He is risen; not has, but is. And because of His victory, all people can rejoice and find hope in a true, life-giving Savior who did exactly what He said He would do (John 2:19). All people can find eternal life ..read more

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household. And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the shee ..read more
