Note: This is part two of a two-part series on how to get better at observing nature. Part one, How to Get Better at Observing Nature, can be found here. So what does it mean to “observe nature the biomimic way”? There are three elements to this concept. The first is truly observing the world around you and noticing everything from the larger systems to the minute details. From entire ecosystems to a unique physical trait of a single species. We discussed how to train yourself to do this in Part 1 of this post! The second is to take those observations and seek to understand not just what you ..read more

What is Biomimicry?

What does the word “biomimicry” mean? Biomimicry is learning from nature, or life, to discover solutions for the human world. The term “Biomimicry” stems from two roots: “Bio” meaning life, and “mimicry” meaning to imitate. Biomimicry means to imitate life. Janine Benyus, co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute and author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, defines Biomimicry as the “conscious emulation of life’s genius.”   Let’s break that down: Conscious: is being intentional in our thoughts and actions. Emulation: is learning from living things, how nature solves a problem, an ..read more

Why is Biomimicry Important?

Many of you may be wondering, why is Biomimicry important? Biomimicry is the methodology that helps us problem solve. For 3.8 billion years, our natural world has been in a constant state of research and development. As our world changes and shifts through natural cycles, the very species that make their home on this Blue Marble has needed to learn to adapt to the changes our earth goes through. We are experiencing those changes now actually. As most of us know, we are experiencing Global Warming. I am not referring to the political rhetoric, but more so in the sense that our world is literall ..read more

What Are the 9 Basic Principles of Biomimicry?
Biomimic Academy

As we begin to learn about biomimicry, one of the first things to understand are the 9 basic principles that outline the “strategies” employed by nature. Understanding these principles is essential because following them is how we turn biomimicry from a theory into a practical application. These principles are not mere guidelines – they are natural laws that organisms and biological systems consistently follow. Why? Because they work. And after 3.8 billion of years, nature has weeded out things that do not work efficiently, effectively, and in a complex environment with limited resources. Thes ..read more

“Childlike Imagination” I was sitting in my Design Methods class one day, my professor was lecturing on brainstorming as a creative method to product design. She was going over the different methods of brainstorming and how to facilitate a successful brainstorming session. My professor was explaining that, during a brainstorming session, we need to think of wild and crazy, blue-sky, ideas. That we need to put ourselves in a childlike imagination. Because no matter how crazy or unrealistic an idea is, there could be an element within that crazy idea that could be used in the final product. “Pu ..read more

Note: This is part one of a two-part series on how to get better at observing nature. Part two, How to Observe Nature the Biomimic Way, can be found here. A crucial first step to finding inspiration in nature is simply learning how to truly observe the natural world. This may sound simple, but it is remarkable how much people miss when they are outside. A big part of this is because we aren’t taught to give that much attention to the world around us. Our schools, jobs, friends, chores, and entertainment all demand our constant focus, and sometimes it’s hard to remember to simply be present in ..read more

It is amazing what kids can soak up. It is even more amazing what kids can do when given a creative challenge, especially in a brand new subject like Biomimicry. Every year, during Tolfree BioFest, I get to witness this phenomenon of child intelligence. Our student teams come up with some of the most amazing ideas during our design challenge, but more importantly, it is inspiring to see them easily grasp such a complex subject. If you are an educator and are interested in introducing your students to Biomimicry, I have compiled a simple challenge that will engage you and your students in under ..read more
