The Biomimicry Institute hosts nature retreats as part of their Ray of Hope and Launchpad programs. It’s like summer camp for bio-inspired innovators. They are typically a week spent in a natural place as part of a longer virtual program. They have been called by many names; nature retreats, reconnection retreat, nature immersion. But what I came to understand over the last week while hosting our 2023 Launchpad cohort in Montana, is that these retreats are more like an intervention.
The 2023 Launchpad cohort is an amazing group of 16 scientists, engineers, architects, designers and artists ..read more

The founder first approach: “As a founder, YOU are your startup.” The Biomimicry Institute helps startup founders challenge themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally by taking them to camp (literally). Read about how this approach helps to unlock creativity, tap into next-level networking connections, and expand opportunities for business that would have otherwise been missed.
Before I became an engineer, startup founder, and eventually the Director of Innovation at the Biomimicry Institute, I was a summer camp counselor. Every summer for three years I would live and work at a ..read more

Traditional and antique educational systems require their next evolution. Today, Learn Biomimicry asks: what can we learn from nature in how we create evolutionary education using biomimicry?
The process of evolution is not a gold-standard one. Trial and error is the way. Credit: DALL-E-1, OpenAI
1. Evolution never planned for greatness but achieved it anyway.
Education needs to adapt to changing conditions and evolve to survive.
How we think of objectives is misleading. The process of evolution is not a goal-oriented one. It does not have an end destination in mind or aims for ..read more

The biomimicry movement is highly practical in orientation. And yet, underlying and motivating the practices of biomimicry, there lies a distinctive philosophy–a profound way of understanding and relating to nature that challenges many of the core assumptions of contemporary thought.
When asked what I do, I often say I am a “philosopher of biomimicry.” Just as philosophers of biology work on biology, I am a philosopher who works on biomimicry, so in that respect the label makes sense. But in another respect, the label is problematic, for biomimicry, at least as I see it, is not just another o ..read more
