While the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 continue to highlight needs for new and proven tools to combat the spread and effects of this novel coronavirus, the development, evaluation and use of treatment strategies must be guided by science. Establishing the safety and efficacy of potential therapies is essential to ensuring their appropriate and effective use. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration must continue to base any approval, including Emergency Use Authorization of treatments and vaccines, on established scientific standards. Promising results among small numbers of patients to approaches ..read more

One year ago, we had just wrapped up IDWeek 2019 in Washington, DC. The meeting planning committee was celebrating what many were calling “the best IDWeek ever.” More than 300 people celebrated at the PIDS Foundation “Party on the Potomac.” The meeting ended on an inspiring note, with the closing plenary devoted to the importance of vaccines. Notably, two of the three talks were given by pediatricians (Dr. Peter Hotez and Dr. Penny Heaton). Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke about “Vaccines for Emerging Diseases: From Science to Implementation.” Who could have imagined in October of 2019 the current race ..read more

Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society
by

Parents in some parts of the country are finding it difficult to get their children tested for COVID-19, according to a recent article in The New York Times. Many testing sites, including those run by cities and states, do not test children or have age minimums that exclude young children, the newspaper reported. A related article in The Washington Post noted that Walgreens’ age limit is 18 at its pharmacy testing sites, while CVS announced on Sept. 11 that it would lower the age limit at its drive-through testing sites from 16 to 12 years of age. “The limited testing hampers schools’ ability ..read more

The last 8 months have been the best of times and the worst of times… for science. Forgive me the Dickensian melodrama and let me explain. In December of 2019, an outbreak of viral pneumonia occurred in Wuhan, China. On January 9, Chinese public health authorities and the World Health Organization confirmed that a novel coronavirus was the cause of the outbreak, and a few days later, the full sequence of the viral genome was reported. Since then, the tempo of scientific discovery has been incredible. The spectrum of clinical manifestations associated with SARS-CoV-2 has been described, includi ..read more

Appendicitis remains one of the most common indications for surgery in children with tens of thousands of appendectomies performed in the U.S. each year. This procedure is associated with the risk of anesthesia as well as post-operative pain and post-operative complications in up to 15% of patients. On the other hand, non-operative management is associated with less post-treatment disability and is successful in up to 75% of patients at one year. Most children and adolescents with appendicitis undergo appendectomies rather than non-operative management with antibiotics alone. However, it is un ..read more
